Matahui Lodge — Hotel in North Island

This was hands down the best stay of our 9 week trip to Australia and New Zealand so far. Trevor and Kay and their family Ross and Therese were the most wonderful hosts we have ever had the pleasure of staying with. Matahui Lodge is the most beautiful property designed and built lovingly by Trevor and Kay. We were welcomed with drinks on the veranda, looking out to sea and surrounded by a multitude of birds and wildlife (herons, hawks, hares, kingfishers, quails to name but a few). If you like wildlife, a peaceful place to stay, delicious home cooked food and great conversation with the loveliest people you could ever wish to meet, then this is the place for you. We loved the pre-dinner drinks with friends and neighbours- we honestly felt that we were with our own family and friends. What sets Matahui Lodge apart from all the other excellent places that we have stayed during our trip, was the fact that Trevor and Kay genuinely wanted to look after us, making sure that we got to experience their wonderful New Zealand hospitality. Little things like letting us do all of our laundry free of charge, lighting the outdoor fire when they noticed I was getting cold , keeping our drinks topped up with Trevor’s delicious homemade wine and going out of their way to make sure that I saw a kingfisher just made the whole experience outstanding. Within minutes of our arrival, we knew this was something special, from the finely appointed lodge to the incredible views from our room and the big table on the veranda. This amazing property combined with the exceptional hospitality Trevor and Kay pamper you with, deserves more than 5 Stars. Sharing pre-dinner drinks with interesting friends and neighbors that drop by makes every evening fun and different. Trevor makes sure your glass is never empty while Kay prepares excellent gourmet meals that incorporate your preferences and local foods. Trevor prepares you for your daily activities with a great breakfast on the veranda, advice on what to do, and when you return you are greeted with food and drinks to settle in for a relaxing evening. My wife and I came here for my daughter’s wedding and ended up having them host a gourmet dinner event for our family. They did a fabulous job creating one of the best memories from our trip to NZ. We decided to have a night away with another couple and from the moment we were greeted by Kay and Trevor we knew were in for a special stay. We were treated and felt we were family and spent the afternoon with a beer and wine getting to know each other. The afternoon merged into the evening with their 92 year neighbour Bevan coming for a beer and a talk before dinner. Then Kay presented this amazing meal with Trevor organising the wines. They were fantastic hosts and stayed up and talked until we decided we that we needed to go to bed. ||The bedrooms and bathrooms are large with amazing views and a comfortable bed ||Prior to leaving we were given an amazing breakfast sitting in the sun overlooking the harbour.
