We were staying at the Matakohe camp ground with friends and noticed that Matakohe House had a sign out saying “licensed cafe and bar” so on Saturday late morning all walked there for something to eat and drink. We approached the house from the lawns at the front and the owner yelled from the veranda “You can f*#k off with those dogs this is private property “. We were stunned to say the least at both the language and the reception! ||We moved away but my partner approached and asked if the bar and cafe was open and was very rudely told “No!” ||Not exactly the friendly hospitable reaction one expects from someone in hospitality. Needless to say will never stay there and will give it a wide berth. It does make for an amusing “dining with friends”...

The Matakohe House was perfect for us. The room was spacious, very clean and faced a magnificent rolling countryside. The proprietors were very welcoming - there was small decanter of sherry to enjoy the scenery with. The breakfast that came with the room was served at the nearby cafe and was a hearty eggs, bacon and toast. If you crave rural peace and quiet, the Matakohe House is highly recommended. Read moreJackie and Daniel are very friendly people who manage to make your stay feel like home. We arrived unexpected. Didn't book in advance which is a bit tricky. Because you have the chance of no vacancy. But most of the times it ends up in marvelous stays. Like now in Matahoke House. The hospitality of Jackie and Daniel deserves a golden medal. I think when we arrived, the kitchen was closed already. But especially for us they made the time to cook a lovely meal. Jackie let us try a piece of her own baked cakes.
