An old friend and I (we live at opposite ends of the island) have a practice where we get together once a year for a night, for a catch-up. Basically the pattern is the same, but we look for a new location roughly equi-distant from both of us, each time. Our preference is for an old hotel or motel with dining facilities, tables and chairs outside the accommodation part (we always do this in Summer or Autumn), so we can sit outside and enjoy the copious amounts of wine we take with us whilst we catch up on the events of our lives in the last year. This starts on arrival around Noon, frequently features a "nanny" nap late afternoon, then dinner followed by more wine, catch-up and nightcaps back at one of our rooms/units, a good nights sleep then parting of the ways late the following morning. ||||I wasn't quite sure what we were going to get here. The hotel (built 1956) has old-style accommodation, some of the rooms do not have en-suite and there are shared Shower/Toilet facilities for those. We opted for a couple of the 5 motel units they own across the road. These are old fashioned motel units with everything self-contained so you can cook for yourself etc. While the units were old they were clean tidy, well maintained, free tea, coffee etc, and most importantly the beds were comfortable. The units did not have Wifi/Internet and I suspect the same applied at the Hotel, but it was good value at $70 per unit per night. Our dinner at the Hotel was a great experience. It was Friday night, the hotel was full of (friendly) locals and we finished up eating our meals in the bar rather than go to the dining room. The service in this place is very friendly and excellent. A reasonable quality wine at $5.00 a glass. When I first looked at the menu I was a bit surprised to see that a steak was $27.00 but I went along with it. No wonder at the price, when it arrived! Biggest fillet steak I've ever had, with lovely fresh home made salad & fries. Can still taste the garlic butter! Overall this was a perfect spot for us. It is not fancy, and won't be everybody's cup of tea but was certainly very good value for...
Read moreThe only reason it was “ok” is because the lady was nice enough to let us have a real late check in due to major traffic delays. But unfortunately that’s all I have that is good to say about the place.. We ended up checking out the very next day and forfeiting a whole night for x2 rooms, it’s SO dusty sometimes it made it hard to breath, wasn’t very clean, needs a major revamp, no towels, had NO hot water which should be a bear minimum when staying somewhere or I wish I was informed before going there, so I could book other accommodation as we had my partners nana with us and that’s not suitable. It’s more of a hostel vibe, there is “rubbish” EVERYWHERE it’s quite wild. The place felt a little spooky, hall way was long & FREEZING. The heaters in the room did work fine which kept us warm, thankfully as there was only a thin blanket on the beds (and we are SO close to mountain full of snow), the snow on the mountain was beautiful tho. There was no pillow cases in one of the rooms and the pillow was stained, there was no bins in the room so there was tissues stuff down the side of the bed from previous guest. I have never in my life left a motel that I have already paid for, yes it’s cheap, but not cheap enough In my opinion… I’m so sadden to leave a review like this, but I would avoid this place at all cost, until some serious...
Read moreI can't compare this place to any other Waiouru accomodation apart from the barracks as I haven't stayed in the other motel. |I have stayed in this motel a few times over the years and it has always been a great place to say...until this time. |It appears the motel has been left to look after itself. The units are very tired and dated. Mismatched furniture, mould on the walls and drapes that are so old and thin they remind you of your grandmothers front room curtains. |Originally the heating in these units was in the form of the old school style radiators. When they were working the rooms were exceptionally warm all the time. Now the heating is left to a ceramic panel heater screwed to the wall and a fan heater. The fan heater had a dodgy connection and had to be tipped backwards to make it work. A possible fire hazard so couldn't be left on to heat the unit while out. |The beds in the units are adequate and the linen is very clean. |The kitchen area is also adequate for a short stay. |The bathroom is similarly adequate. |All in all the motel is quite close to the mountain. Walking distance to the National Army Museum which is the big drawcard for Waiouru. |The staff at the Oasis motel and hotel are the stars of this establishment they are friendly and helpful. |Unfortunately until the motel is updated we won't be...
