Stayed at Angus and Leannes ataahua whare from November 7th-10th as it was my mums 80th birthday. The last time I was here was when the previous owner had it and I hadn't been back to Toko since 2009.
They've spruced her up and put alot of TLC into the place, planting lots of natives up the bank.
The only two things I'd change is the showers by installing shower wands so you can take it of the bracket and quickly wash your lower half which would use less water and possibly an outdoor fan on the alfresco and a couple of solar powered zappers / mozzy deterrents so you can stay outside longer not being eaten alive.    Read moreBrian's place is a small homely hostel with amazing views over Tokomaru Bay. My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night in June. The acting manager, Kate, was very friendly and helpful, as were Girl and Gypsy (the resident dog and cat). The place was very well kept and clean, and the small common room was lovely and warm with the fire. The double room was quite cold down the other end of the house, but we were offered extra blankets and a couple of hot water bottles to keep us warm! Breakfast in the morning with the sun rising over the sea and a cup of real (!) coffee was the icing...

Leanne and her man did suggest us many things and locations to visit for the northisland, like tourguides. There is the mountain Hikurangi near Tokomaru Bay, 20min by car and there is a nice walk to the hut of Mt. Hikurangi (4h), to go to the Top of the mountain you have to be a experienced hiker! Contact Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou before you start. In the backpacker there is a very nice kitchen and bathrooms too. Best...
