There are a lot of positives about the hotel but one big negative that ruined the entire holiday experience. This includes the HOTEL CALLING MY ROOM AT 7.15 am WITHOUT TELLING ME THEY WOULD IN ADVANCE, let alone asking for my permission. A strangely cult like experience.
The bad: Upon checking in, I was given an offer for a $100 voucher for accomodation/fuel that required coming to a "hour long presentation" is what I was told. They said they currently have an offer to double it to $200. I said I was open to it and I wish I never did. This started a process that led to constant contact by commission hungry staff. I don't blame the staff, who were friendly but this is a terrible idea by their sales manager. The first night there were 3 calls to try to confirm if I could come (while I was in the shower, balcony and eating dinner). I called back and said I can't today as I am doing a 15 km hike tomorrow but I might tomorrow. Next day, I get back from my hike and there were 2 more calls to try to confirm while I was occupied. Who knows how many other calls I missed while I was out of the room. I call back at night and say I will attend the 7.30 am session but the person responded "you are already signed up, we'll see you tomorrow." It's weird because I hadn't confirmed till just then. 7.15 am my phone rings. I never was told I'd be called. I never gave permission for a call. I am in a 1 bedroom apartment so the phone is in a completely separate room. This call woke up the other guest in the room, who had planned to sleep in due to being on holiday. I go down to the reception and the first thing they ask is "where is xxxx Chowdhury" (trying to indicate my partner). I said "xxxx Chowdhury doesn't exist and she is trying to get back to sleep." She said my apologies if this is personal but its really important for our training session but "what is your relationship with her, it's really important for the training session." I was really surprised by her question but also by the fact that she was 'signed up' as she never said yes to this, only I did (to my own demise). I answered, "she is my girlfriend." Then I said that I can't stay over an hour because I check out today but I can stay for the hour that the hotel staff told me it would take during check in. She said "it's definitely for 90 minutes." I said, "okay, I'm not coming because I check out this morning." She apologized and I told her although it's not her fault but I wanted to speak to her manager (I have never asked to speak to a hotel manager in the 30 years). She said the manager wasn't available but that I could write my feedback on a literal 3 cm x 3 cm post it note. I left the reception.
The Good: The 1 bedroom apartment in the hotel is really nice. The staff are really nice people aside from the constant haggling about the promotion to earn their commissions. It is my own fault for not saying no at first instance.
TLDR; Extremely unprofessional hotel with poor management that has ruined my hotel stay during my...
Read moreWe booked a king suite through Chase travel. Be careful to copy your booking details when you book because although the Chase site said it would have AC, the final confirmation and our room did not. It doesn't get too hot in Wanaka but our room was warm and stuffy when we arrived after a few days of sunny, summer weather. We needed to open all windows and turn on the fans to cool it off. I am not comfortable sleeping with windows open, but it was our only choice to be comfortable. With the windows even cracked open a bit, you could hear everything from other rooms that also had their windows open- like the gentleman using the toilet directly above us at 12am, 4am; and the weed eaters at 7am outside our patio door. Not to mention we had our patio door wide open one morning and the groundskeeper came by spraying for weeds right outside our door. I would have like to have been notified so I could have kept our doors closed during the spraying time.
Housekeeping is only weekly, so we didn't have any during our two night stay.
The service and staff in the lobby and small restaurant were fantastic. We were greated with a welcome cocktail and joined them for happy hour one night. Everyone really wants to make the stay nice. We at at the breakfast buffet once (an add-on when we checked in), but it was unfortunately not great. The eggs were undercooked for my taste and had a bulk, scrambled egg taste. The coffee however was good- they have an automatic machine you can make cappucinos with and it's free even if you don't get the breakfast buffet (which I don't recommend)
Since it's a timeshare, the electric bikes can only be rented by members. This was dissappointing.
Caution: We ordered a desert and asked to confirm it didn't have nuts. The server even asked the chef (behind closed doors) and told us it didn't have nuts. It had walnuts- or something that tasted very much like walnuts. Luckily, I had my spouse taste it before I did as this could be deadly for someone with a severe nut allergy. I was surprised because every where we ate in New Zealand, they were very aware of food requirements - celiac,...
