We enjoyed our night camping at Hans Bay Lake Kaniere, a suggestion if we may.
We felt that too much space has been given over to motor vehicles and not much left for small tent campers, the motor vehicles can drive and park anywhere and this has been detrimental to the camping areas. Vehicle tracks and quite deep ruts have destroyed areas that would otherwise be lovely to camp in. At the grassed areas it would be quite simple and not too costly we think to erect wooden barriers so that all motor vehicles could be kept to the gravelled areas and leaving the grassed areas to camp in. Over time we think these barriers would pay for themselves reducing maintenance.

Read moreHey! We recently had 5 lovely, quiet nights here! Very well maintained, bins, loos, sort of shaded sink area. A bit tight if busy, but wasn't where we were there. Hard to find a level spot on the lower level, but lovely, and very quiet. The lake is gorgeous for a swim. Can't camp down on the foreshore, campsite is further back. Good phone signal. Oh, FYI, we heard an NZMCA member telling a fellow NZMCA member that NZMCA members don't have to pay for DOC campsites out of peak season, this isn't true, at all, NZMCA members get discounts, but do have to pay, unless of course you have the DOC Campsite Pass like we do! We'll definitely be back! Find us on YouTube if you're touring,...
Read moreA great place to do your summer camping, heaps of tent sites available with great WS toilets, shower and tap water facilities. So many things to do around.... The lake is a very popular spot for swimming, fishing and kayaking. There are so many great short walks around the lake or do the 9km lake Kaniere track where you get a bird's eye view of the lake. Dorothy falls is just a short walk away or drive to Hokitika gorge where you walk on a suspension bridge over the amazing turquoise waters of the Hokitika river. End of the day you can have a dip in the lake and a beer by the lake edge lawn watching the evening...
