Tokerau beach freedom camp — Hotel in Te Hiku Community

Stunning place for freedom camping! Do note that the spot for freedom campers is rather bumpy, as I arrived late evening after it had gotten completely dark, I managed to get my van stuck in the sand and bushes. Very scary as I travel alone. Luckily there were many campers around, and after a lot of beating, I got my van out of the sand and bushes. Try to stick to the one path that is more visible and try to go when it’s dry. If you don’t have a 4WD like I didn’t :(( It is for self contained vehicles only, someone mentioned the toilets being far away, and that is because they are meant for the daytime beach guests and not for campers. Do note that the ground by the toilet doesn’t allow overnight camping (which I found out the morning after I stayed there, as I moved there after the fright the freedom camping site gave me) which is noted by a sign that really isn’t visible during night, oops 😬 But you’ll be waking up to stunning views of sunrise over the...

Nice spot right next to the beach! I was sceptical coming here as I thought we may get stuck in our van from the reviews on the camping apps however, it's ok to drive in here! There is plenty of room, easy access to park. Just watch for large puddles and check sand for soft spots in case you get stuck. There is a toilet, I haven't yet been up to have a look. amazing freedom camping spot😍👌🏼 loads of space, gorgeous beach (great for kiting!!) and amazing view from your camper - BUT be carefull with sandy roads&sinkholes! 3 Motorhomes got stuck just the evening we were there, with luck and help of others they got out, but you have to be very careful and check where you’re driving!!
