This is a review for those wanting to rent a room for overnight stay as well as drive to the hotel. Most reviews from other people pertain to the activities offered there. I did not try any of those things so I cannot comment on them.
First, this is on a mountain where the air feels incredibly clean. Second, the rooms are made to look like wooden cabins and are kept very clean. Third, this place is quiet and a nice escape from the crowds down the road.
We had room number six. The hot water was unpredictable. The water would at times come out too hot. Trying to manipulate the knob to balance the temperature will only lead to a complete halt of the hot water and replaced with freezing cold water. Even after waiting several minutes, the hot water did not return. What you’ll need to do is turn off the water completely and wait a minute. Then turn the knob all the way to the left until hot water comes out. Again, maneuvering the knob to obtain a balanced temperature will be an exercise. I called the front desk to let them know. They gave me the classic excuse that they will “let their technicians know.” Well, um, I never received a call back. Judging from the staffs’ reaction to my mentioning the hot water a few times, you can tell that the hot water issue is their Achilles' heel. By the way, room number six was the last room available. I wonder why. I'm sure the rest of the rooms work perfectly fine.
The room was loud throughout the night with the constant howling of the wind. That could be a good thing for some people, though. The room is made to look like a wood cabin so you feel like you are out in nature. The beds and pillows are excellent. My friend bragged about how much he liked the pillows. Too bad our room smelled of heavy lysol which was disappointing. No alternative rooms were available so no use in complaining.
No air conditioning unit, meaning no heat or cold air. Again, that could be a good thing, too. It will likely never get too hot or too cold in that location on the mountain. But if you are the type that needs air conditioning, you will not find it here.
Here is the worst part of our stay - the drive in and out of the hotel. You will notice that the several minute long drive up the hill is narrow. So narrow that cars coming in the opposite direction will require both parties to move to the extreme edge to allow for passing room. Folks, this is a very scary drive at night especially in the rain. You will come across just one or two lights street lights and you will be left feeling like you are in a horror movie. This place needs a real road and lights are desperately needed.
Anyway, the staff was well-trained. You can tell they are nice folks doing their best. However, they once answered the phone by simply saying hello instead of a formal business greeting. I asked her why she did not use a formal greeting and she refused to answer. Anyway, complimentary breakfast is good. Overall, I would rent a room again if there were no other choices left in town. I do recommend this place for its...
Read moreThe idea/hope was to spend 3 nights/2 days in the middle of nature, doing some hikes staying in a place that would facilitate this. ||Good things about this hotel:|- friendly staff|- restaurant and terrace with beautiful view towards mount Baru|- causy rustic bar with fire place|- good food|- In the middle of nature||It’s definitely colder up there then in Boquete. And more wet. ||But we were highly disappointed by:|- rather plain and simple room with view on the parking !!! (rooms 1-5). I don’t understand the point of even offering this kind of room in a hotel that builds its unique selling proposition on the contact with the superb nature all around. And because of that parking outside there was hardly any privacy except with all curtains closed. Definitely overpriced! Even rooms 6-10 have no view down the valley. |- There is a free shuttle service connecting the hotel with Boquete. But arriving after 3pm (last shuttle time every day) in Boquete from our previous location, we had to organize our own taxi. Next day , after finishing our self organized hike, we have been waiting for the shuttle to show up in Palo Alto to take is up to the hotel (4,5km). The shuttle did not show up and , we understood, never left Boquete at 3pm as the schedule promised. So we had to walk up to the hotel. |- 5 tours are suggested every day at 3 different times. They all take 2 hours. Which means you can easily do 2 of them. I still suppose they offer good quality. But we like hiking and a 2h/3km tour is not really what we were looking for. But from the hotel there was not really a good option for us to go hiking except to go back halfway towards Boquete and start the Pianista trail. |- In the causy bar area, they lit the fire in the morning but then it was finished for the day. Sitting there and having a drink in the evening …. No fire ! And once the sun is gone it really got colder compared to Boquete. ||Conclusion:|- if you don’t have your own car, don’t stay in the hotel. You will be stuck. |- If you want to join their tours (If that’s your thing, then I suggest you do) you can book them in Boquete and use the free shuttle. That’s what the shuttle is meant to do, not so much to transport hotel guests. |- Don’t rent rooms 1-5. They are not worth the money. |- This is not a mountain resort. It’s an adventure park with a small hotel attached to it. The main business is the tours they organize 3 times a day. And the restaurant that caters to...
Read moreBook this! There are a couple zipline options in Boquete and while I'd say try them both, if you have time for just one, this is it. Stunning views, super high platforms, 12 long runs (with two more coming soon), very personable staff...the list goes on.
Here's a bit of what to expect. Booking. You can book directly with them or through Boquete Outdoor Adventures (BOA). BOA has some nice deals when you bundle with whitewater (also awesome) so be sure to check them out. We made the mistake of booking separately, but the staff at Tree Trek helped us out. Day of. We booked the 8AM. 8AM: shuttle arrives at Plaza los Establos. It's the same building as many other tour operators, including BOA. It's about a 30 minute ride up the mountain in an open-sided shuttle. Nice views are off to the left. 8:30AM: You meet your guides and they get you geared up. Your personal belongings go in free lockers. 8:40AM: 10 minute safety briefing. They'll show you how to use the gear you're given. Don't worry: they'll explain this again when you're on the mountain. 9AM: after a quick ride up the mountain, they take group shots and you're on the first zipline. The route is built into a canyon, so they start short, then get progessively longer and higher off the ground. Yes, it gets high up (seems about 80+ feet), but you're in good hands. 10:15AM: You're done! The last zip ends up right where you put on your gear. Pick up your stuff, then go see the pictures they were taking of you throughout. They charge $15 for a USB thumb drive of them all. 11:30AM: You might have to wait a while to get back into town. The area is pretty, so we relaxed on the grounds and in the lodge. Then you'll ride back in the same shuttle as you did before. 12PM: You're back in town at Plaza Los...
