The Hotel Turistas provided one of the best rooms we've had so far on our vacation in Peru. ||||We read the review of others, and don't understand what they are complaining about. Our room was extremely spacious and modern, our view of Abancay was impressive, and we didn't hear any traffic described previously. ||||The price was so inexpensive (s/90) that we decided to upgrade to the 'matrimonial suite' (s/150) -- which still works out to less than $50 CAD a night. This is a fraction of the price of what we were paying for a room in Cusco.||||The staff was courteous and helpful, despite our mediocre Spanish. It made booking the room somewhat challenging, but their prices were clearly printed at the front desk. They also allowed us to park our rental car in the private gated garage area for added security.||||The entire hotel is probably one of the largest in Abancay, taking up a full city square block with a large stone wall surrounding the complex (this is not unusual for older high-end hotels in Peru)||||There was free wifi in the rooms, a giant flat screen TV with satellite channels, and new super-modern furniture. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained. There was also hot water ( after running it for several minutes - also normal in Peru )||||We need to point out that the suite we stayed in was located in the newly constructed tower, built behind the older traditional section of the hotel. This may explain the discrepancy in hotel experiences reported at this location.||||The included breakfast was a standard continental breakfast. For a few Soles more you can upgrade to ham & eggs, crepes, or sandwiches, all with the fantastic super strong...
Read moreIt was only a one-night stay during the tour but it was really nice one. The hotel is old fashioned - apparently not much changed since the opening in 1946, at least in the part I stayed. But it only gave the place some additional charm. Room and bathroom were spacious and clean, sheets and towels new and clean, too. Shower was good though it did take some time to warm up. WiFi was fast. Breakfast was of limited choice but excellent quality. Probably the best juice and bread selection we had in Peru. The hotel has a pool area which looks somewhat abandoned - did not try the pool, though. There is also a small pleasant garden, nice for a short morning stroll. There was some noise from a street (or hotel area) of some goings-on, but it did not last longer than 11 p.m. so no ...
Read moreRe-visited one year on from my last review - nothing much has changed. Central location, fine old building (and new Annex), nice gardens. Vigorous on-site management would work wonders overnight - I have a soft spot for this hotel, and just wait for that to happen. It could be so good. As it is, same old sleepy front desk with the inoperative card machine, ante-diluvial presentation of breakfast, restaurant just about ok, no thought to fitting/retro-fitting security boxes in the gloomy rooms (so simple), three days to get a bath mat, 2hrs to get a glass - and so on. Just details, but... Paradoxically, I keep going back, more out of curiosity rather than expectation. One...
