Very nice place to stay - in part because the rooms are nice but also the area around the lodge is idyllic and gets you away from the noise, dogs, diesel and litter that unfortunately abound in Huaraz proper. Well worth it just for the waking up every day feeling like you're in the mountains.
The inn is conveniently located to a few day hikes from the front gate (2-3 depending on your willingness to walk long distances on the roads) but most hikes will benefit from a taxi trip. The inn has negotiated flat rates for taxis and can help arrange pickup after your hike which is vital for some of the more lengthy routes.
Dinner is really good with nice home-style recipes from ingredients grown at the lodge. It was a refreshing break from restaurant style food and every dinner had ample vegetables and variety - not your typical hunk of meat sitting next to a pile of rice/pasta/potatoes that we've encountered at other full board places in Peru.
The owners are very friendly native English speakers who immigrated to Peru over 20 years ago. As a result they know the community and area really well while also having the experience of life outside of Peru. I think this makes them exceptionally good at running a comfortable place for foreign travelers.
To set expectations, the facility is closer to a very nice bed and breakfast than it is to a luxury hotel or ski resort. Dinner is at a long table with other guests unless you ask to eat alone, the owners live on the property and are often around to chat and give advice, and the kitchen opens directly into the main lobby of the central house. There are also composting toilets which aren't the most pleasant smelling contraptions ever invented, but are bearable and well maintained. Showers are hot and reliable and heaters are provided for the rooms. Laundry service and packed hiking lunches are offered at a very modest additional cost.
Overall, great experience and if there's availability I'd highly recommend...
Read moreWhat an amazing slice of heaven!!! The inn is nestled between the Cordillera Blanca and Negra Mountain ranges. Wayne and Diane have curated a one-of-a-kind experience 25 mins from Huaraz at the base of many incredible treks. You can easily get to them on foot or by an arranged taxi ride. We did Llaca Valley and its amazing laguna, Quilcayhuanca Valley, and finally Churup and its Laguna. The beauty is spellbinding with mountains, glaciers, and wildlife abound. We were able to do so much because the Inn has everything taken care of, and they have truly thought of it all. We were greeted by Maria Garcia and the sweetest dog Canela. Maria Garcia is the assistant manager of the inn and has a wealth of knowledge. She helped us get a full understanding of the inn, the hikes, and really all about Peru. Every day you wake up to a wonderful full breakfast and can order a packed lunch. After the day’s activities, whether it is hiking, riding horses, relaxing around the grounds, enjoying the sauna or fireplaces, they provide a fantastic home cooked meal. Nancy, Darmila, and Mayala are the backbones of the operation. They make the meals and take care of the rooms, do laundry, and stoke the nightly fires. They also have beautiful handmade artisanal garments from the local families you can purchase. Marica Garcia had some time off and was relieved by Julio. He took care of the management and helped us with all our needs. He is a wonderful man with a great laugh, smile, and love for music. He is also one of the premier mountain bike guides in the area and can take you on a day trip. When not on the go, we spent time relaxing on the balconies looking at the snowcapped mountains absolutely amazed by the majesty in...
