Disappointing Stay at Microtel by Wyndham

My husband and I were looking forward to a relaxing beach getaway and decided on a 3-night stay at Microtel by Wyndham. Unfortunately, our expectations were not met, leading to a rather disappointing experience.

Upon check-in, we were initially assigned a "garden room," which, to our dismay, had no view of a garden and was dark and damp. Hoping for a better experience, we requested an upgrade to a sea view room despite the additional charge. Regrettably, the supposed upgrade did not significantly improve our situation, as the room was nothing special and did little to enhance our stay.

The overall condition of the hotel was far from welcoming. The property felt dated, old, and unkempt, to the extent that it was challenging to believe it was clean. A persistent damp smell throughout, likely due to inadequate ventilation, added to our discomfort. This was further exacerbated by the hotel's old AC units, which, while they seemed to keep the room somewhat fresh, were loudly disruptive. The housekeeping staff would turn these off during the day, leaving the room feeling miffy, moldy, and wet upon our return. The bedding was another significant letdown. The pillows were hard, and the bedding was stiff and overly starched, making for an uncomfortable sleep. Instead of a cozy duvet, we were provided with a basic blanket. Given the hotel's prime location right on the beach, it was disappointing to see the struggle in maintaining the property against the constant battle with sea and saltwater damage. We were taken aback by the numerous additional charges for amenities that are typically complimentary in other hotels. Basic necessities like hotel towels were only available for rent, with peculiar warnings about additional charges for staining the beddings. The WiFi service was virtually non-existent in our room and only marginally better in the lobby area. The breakfast experience was underwhelming; despite being informed breakfast was available from 6-10 AM, the service wasn't ready by 6:15 AM. The selection was odd and limited, lacking international options and essentials like a toaster (brought out after we finished eating), milk for coffee, and overall, very limited service.

Regarding the location, while the hotel is situated on the beach, the beach itself is more of a mangrove. With the tide low most of the time, it was not suitable for swimming, which was a major disappointment.

Ultimately, we decided to book another hotel in hopes of salvaging our vacation and are currently seeking a refund from Microtel by Wyndham. I hope the hotel considers some...

My I firstly say all the Staff are extremely friendly and helpful |The hotel is extremely clean. but the hotel does need a little attention with paint. Rooms specially the bathrooms do need updating and a bit old fashioned. The entrance Road needs urgent attention.|Now there is one thing I can't get my head around is that in garden view room you do not get a tray with any tea, coffee, kettle or fridge.|Next if you get a beach view room you you do get coffee creamer sugar a Kettle A small fridge BUT NO TEA BAGS|The Top rooms and the you get TEA coffee sugar a bigger fridge. And probably a few Extra things like a welcome drink and maybe a little momentum of your stay. It Would be A nice touch. Why is there a difference in the room levels. And not everyone wants to drink Coffee.|Beach sandy with mangrove to the right and left.Water is like a warm bath when sunny. But very shallow in depth..|And the view from far to hotel is lovely. The pool is nice.||it's the Restaurant that is letting the hotel down. Breakfast if you are Filipino you are ok. But for Europe Australia New Zealand and rest your choice is extremely limited again no tea now hear is another quirky thing is if less than 30 served on a plate . and you want a fried egg or something else you have to pay for it.|If over 30 guests you don't have to pay but you still have to ask. it's also served yourself |So I had cereal and pancakes for 6 days. Maybe a slice of bread and jam. |Again no tea. Only one fruit juice that's is made from powder mixed with water. One day as a fruit juice they had ICE TEA.!!!! Since when has been a fruit juice.|Dinner we were the only 2 the meal was ok nothing special but it was over 20 plus before if arrived. I asked for it to be served Piping hot and both meals at same time. We did not get either the meat was warm mashed potato was probably intent was cold and carrots was cold. The meal size was small. We paid the bill cost expensive for what we got. There was a 8% service charge. We left Absolutely no Atmosphere.|That was the first and last time. For Dinner.|I complained to hotel and so did other guests. Over the 7 nights we were there. If I was on my own I would of told them I'm not paying. Or they don't offer a reduction . |As for breakfast on our last day|The hotel must of said something. As we had little extra better bread and some rolls. Along with some extremely thin cheese that was getting hot and sweaty WOW|Now I understand it's a Consesony So as I can see this must affect the hotel.|Last thing there nothing around no little shops CafĂŠ Restaurant. But they have a van that takes you to...

Some disappointments, but acceptable.

Stayed for a couple of days with my family. Please see review below...

PROS: Vigilant security: always observing, roving, manning posts, well armed and ready. Courteous and reponsive staff. Wonderfully secluded and quiet location in the off season. Family / kid friendly (Kids' Menu, swing / slide set in mini-playground by the pool area). Good food and drink. Hearty buffet breakfast and dinner selection. The Mojito was good. Bar seemed well stocked with good liquor selection. Efficient check-in. Our VERY early checkout had to make staff "go the extra mile," but worked out well inspite of our pre-ordered packed breakfast delay. Clean lobby (including furnishings). Staff do a GREAT job of keeping the common area free of sand!!! You are literally steps away from the ocean once the daily morning tide comes in. Very clean beddings / sheets. Room had NO "funny" odors (due to mold, mildew or improper sanitation. International clientele.

CONS: Dust balls / bunnies under the beds! Disappointing. Housekeeping Supervisor / Manager needs to pay more attention. The Restaurant Manager / Supervisor seemed always grumpy / sour. Her mind seemed to be on her personal problems rather than the diners. Maybe her pregnancy has something to do with it; I wish her the best. The hot breakfast buffet was slightly cool and NOT warmed to proper temperature (to say the least); possible health issue here. Pesky flies in the restaurant dining area; not overwhelming, but IS a sanitation issue. --- Some flies were wantonly landing on the displayed fruits, vegetables, breads. I observed a juvenile fly land and get stuck in some orange(?) marmalade. Needless to say, we did not eat anything that was uncovered at the buffet serving area. Really disgusting. EFFORT NEEDS TO BE MADE TO CONTROL FLIES. I saw no fly control devices / traps in dining area.

MICROTEL, please don't take your past accolades for granted; maintain or...

Microtel by Wyndham is a bit far from other places of attraction. You need to book a taxi or tricycle for a ride out though they do offer free shuttle services to and from Robinsons Place on certain time intervals. The beach area is surrounded by mangroves and the water may be a bit shy. Not sure if it's just the time of year but low tide starts at around 4pm until 10am the follwing day. High tide will see waters up to your ankles. Hehe Good thing they have a smimming pool. :) The staff are very accommodating and friendly, they'll tidy up your room everyday. The best thing here is a vendo which offers free coffee 24/7! A sure plus to coffee lovers. Breakfast buffet.. is okay; though staff need to be more attentive especially when the food needs to be restocked. I had to call their attention twice for 2 days straight since the brewed coffer dispenser had ran out of coffee. The bread spreads tray for butter and jams were always empty and the egg omelette guy was no where to be seen. Also, it should say a lot if guests start to order in from fast food joints. I witnessed two deliveries during our stay, one from a burger joint amd another one from a pizza parlor. The food at the resort's Senordamla restaurant is not bad though it is a bit on the pricey side. Of course, they have implemented the no smoking policy all around the resort but they do provide a smoking area out by the parking area. Overall, the resort is clean and the view is great! Facilities need a bit of improvement but still a great place to stay and relax.

Rooms and toilets were clean and spacious. We stayed in a 2-queen sized bed room with a toilet. Has a TV and a small cabinet. No telephone and no personal ref (not a necessity for us). Happy that their toilets were fairly nice and clean. A little dim for my liking but it's fine. Has a bidet! And a blow dryer. Towels provided looked brand new and white. Floors were grimy or gross when wet because of the non-skid tiles. Lavatory counter is a little high for Asians. Faucet and shower are okay but nice if it could be improved or replaced. I think Microtel is the one of the very few accomodations in that location or area in Puerto Princesa that had a beach front. It's at the east side so sunrise view! It has 2 levels only, no elevator. Has a swimming pool. Food from their restaurant is actually very good. Loved their freshly baked wheat bread and their pizza are good! Almost all their food is good! Very friendly and accommodating staff! Though they could improve on some hotel policy knowledge or food information. We asked a hotel staff and she wasn't very sure of the details and we asked a waitress to describe a food item an she wasn't aware what it was. It would be nice if they've tried most of food so that they can recommend or something like that next time. Wi-Fi is kinda slow in the rooms and the restaurant. Internet connection is better at the lobby area. Hopefully that improves.

We stayed at Microtel by Wyndham Puerto Princesa for just one night, booking five rooms for a quick family staycation. At first, we were a bit skeptical due to some mixed reviews online, but we were pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable the experience turned out to be! Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed with shell necklaces, and the check-in process was smooth and efficient. The rooms were spacious and clean, giving us plenty of space to relax. The kids especially enjoyed the pool—while it’s not very large, it was more than enough for them to have fun. The beachfront is beautiful—perfect for photo ops and water activities, though perhaps not ideal for swimming. Still, it adds a charming touch to the resort’s peaceful ambiance. A few areas could use some improvement: • The TVs are a bit outdated—an upgrade to smart TVs would enhance the guest experience. • The window-type air conditioners, while functional, can be a bit noisy. • Some furniture and room details could benefit from light touch-ups to maintain a fresher look. As for the restaurant (operated by a concessioner), the breakfast was decent—nothing fancy, but enough to start the day. Overall, Microtel Puerto Princesa exceeded our expectations. It’s a great spot for a relaxing and affordable getaway, and with a few upgrades, it could be even better. Would definitely consider staying again!
