Beautiful surroundings, but the rooms don’t match the price or the photos
Monte de Alpadueras sits in a truly stunning natural setting — surrounded by fruit trees, wide-open skies, and the gentle sounds of sheep, cows, and birds in the distance. The outdoor scenery is peaceful and restorative, and the pools and landscape make it feel like a hidden countryside retreat.
However, once you step inside, the charm begins to fade. The photos online make the rooms look bright and spacious, but in reality, they are dark, small, and filled with heavy, old mahogany furniture that gives off a musty, lingering smell. The walls are thin — you can hear everything from other guests, which makes rest difficult even in such a quiet location.
The bed was by far one of the most uncomfortable I’ve had anywhere: the mattress was hard, uneven, and squeaked loudly with every movement. The bathroom was extremely cramped, with a shower so small it’s difficult to turn around in. When I arrived, the bathroom lights went out — staff kindly tried to replace the bulbs, but the issue wasn’t fixed, and I spent three days using a dark bathroom.
Breakfast was included and served daily, but it was exactly the same every morning: cold ham, eggs, bread, coffee, and juice. The fresh juice was lovely, but a little variety would have gone a long way.
The property itself is quite remote — you really need a car, as taxis are expensive even for short distances, and walking to Zambujeira do Mar takes around 30 minutes each way.
For the price, I expected more comfort and attention to detail. The natural beauty of the place is undeniable, but the rooms and facilities simply don’t justify the cost. With updates, soundproofing, and better maintenance, Monte de Alpadueras could truly become as special inside as...
Read moreGreat hospitality is interwoven into every aspect of this delightful place’s DNA. Being 2km outside of Zambujeira do Mar, we were offered a free car ride each time we needed to go into town. Each of us had a bowl of fresh raspberries in our room on arrival and then were offered tea/cake which we felt badly in need of, having walked a long way there, and were thrilled with. The showers were hot and powerful, the rooms very comfortable. Unfortunately the corner room has a big problem with condensation. Our breakfast was served later than we’d have liked but that was to enable them to serve us delicious fresh bread and croissants. And the breakfast included more treats like fresh raspberry juice and pancakes. We were glad we’d waited. This must be a fantastic warmer weather place to stay and take advantage of the...
Read moreThe place is amazing. We had a very comfortable little two story flat that had all we needed. Each flat also has a table with seats outside and a hammock with a nice view on the hills. The hotel has three small pools: one bigger outside, one kid pool outside and one heated pool inside. There are nice sunbeds that you can relax on at the pools. I especially want to recommend ordering breakfast. It's not very expensive, but you can choose multiple options, and all the food tastes just amazing. They serve freshly baked warm bread, fresh berries and pressed orange juice. We had enough food left to take with us on the hike. The only disadvantage is the location. The hotel is ca. 2.5 km away from the centre of the town, and there is no proper pedestrian path there, so one has to walk along...
