We stayed at the Guesthouse Mesao Provesende for three nights and would go back in a heartbeat.||||This one-of-a-kind inn is in a beautiful village high up in the hills overlooking the Douro River and the town of Pinhao. The twisty road up was well worth the challenge as the owners, Jet and Ronald, provided us with non-stop hospitality, staring off with our accommodation which comprised a basic bedroom, an enormous sitting/living area and an equally commodious bathroom. Jet and Ronald are from the Netherlands originally, and the house was filled with curios reflecting their homeland as well as the many years spent in Portugal. ||||On two of our three nights, dinner was provided to all guests family style at a large table on a balcony with a breathtaking view. Throughout dinner, Ronald, wine master par excellence, would introduce bottles of Portuguese wine matching the various delicious courses prepared by Jet. No doubt this enhanced the conviviality of the chatter among the guests who were from all over...South Africa, Romania, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada. ||||Our hosts were also very helpful recommending quintas to visit as well as local sites such as the Sunday market in Pinhao, an outing on the Douro River, and the port museum in Regua. We followed their advice and were not disappointed.||||Provesende itself is a treat with quirky restaurants and bars, a pretty town square and church, and a couple of attractive gift shops selling more than the usual tacky souvenirs.||||That we did not use the inn’s pretty pool is our only regret.||||Note that payment is by...
Read moreJet and Ronald are so welcoming. We recently returned to the UK after our third stay at Mesao Provesende. The attraction isn’t solely the hosts, the beautiful location, house, rooms and suites, pool, garden - it’s the dining experience. So unique and so reasonably priced. Delicious home cooked food; 3 courses accompanied by local wines and ports matched to each course. Ronald is incredibly knowledgeable and the whole dining experience is convivial. Over the years we’ve met many lovely people. Mesao Provesende is a melting pot of many like minded people of differing nationalities all enjoying the holiday atmosphere and fine wines.
It doesn’t end there. Breakfast is a delight. Fresh bread rolls, jams, cheese, fresh fruit, yoghurt, ham plus tea and coffee etc etc and the views from the dining area are superb. Do not pay any attention to a couple of reviews that make reference to the ‘Cellar’. How ridiculous! The ground floor bedrooms / suites can never be considered ‘cellars'. We’ve stayed in two of them. They are delightful and very large - all with kitchenettes, dining tables and huge comfortable beds. These rooms also have the advantage of being cool in the hot summer months and they all exit into the fabulous garden lovingly tended by Jet. I have no doubt that we will return again for a fourth visit. Do yourselves a favour - book upper or ground floor rooms / suites with confidence - enjoy the Mesao Provesende experience - you’ll be...
Read moreWe stayed with our friends for 5 nights at Mesao Provesende. Jet and Ronald were great hosts and the rooms were large and ours had a wonderful view over the most beautiful wisteria in flower . Just gorgeous. Jet cooked us 2 wonderful meals while we there and Ronald served wines to match , great value and great fun. We were lucky to do some walking using information from past guests. Provesende is a beautiful town and well worth exploring. We spent 1 day driving to Foz de Coa and had a tour of the rock art there, again well worth it and Jet helped us to organise a short boat tour on the Douro River. We were very lucky that Ronald had time to show us some Quintas in the area and we all felt that this was our most interesting and enjoyable day there. We cooked meals on 2 nights and Jet booked us into a local restaurant for the first night we arrived which was a wonderful introduction to the town. Great communication and a fabulous place to stay as a base to explore a beautiful part...
