This is a small tour group hotel with the traditions of the Russian countryside and all the mod cons of a comfy hotel. The staff spoke English and were eager to please. The breakfast buffet was good and we had lovely dinners in the restaurant, with some of the ingredients coming from their own farm. ||||Our trip to Russia would not have be complete without a visit to a banya, a cross between a bathhouse and sauna, and while could have visited very swanky baths in Moscow, we chose instead to come to the private banya attached to our hotel. Once we arrived, we made a booking as they need notice to heat it up. Leana took us round and explained what it was that we should do. The parilka or steam room, looking very like a sauna, is heated by a wood-fired furnace up to around 100 degrees and one spends maybe 10 minutes in the heat before cooling down by dousing one’s head from a suspended bucket of water and taking a dip in the tub filled with cold water … or if you are feeling like a wimp, just taking a shower! After drying off, and drinking some tea and resting in the relaxing room, the whole experience is repeated several times over a two hour period. We also had a venik or tied bunch of birch branches to lightly beat the flesh, to help cleanse the skin of toxins while in the sauna, which were actually very soft. The charge for 2hours was 3000 roubles for both of us which seemed excellent value and an experience well...
Read moreThis is a pleasant. small inn, within walking distance of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, local markets and tourist shopping. It is on a street lined with authentic wooden houses, brightly painted. The rooms have all the necessities (minimal toiletries, no lotion) ), small a table, two chairs, min-bar fridge, and plenty of storage space. The bathroom is small, with one of those annoying hand-held showers. ||||There is a small restaurant, where I ate both nights. The food was some of the best I had in Russia. Excellent Borscht and "fried" salmon, which is really sauteed. I was almost the only one there, so the service was great.Breakfast was interesting, delicious and varied. ||||There is a covered picnic area on the property and a woodcarver, apparently next door. Don't peak behind the fence to his workshop, his dog gets very upset. Apparently there are lots of activities during tourist season, and a banya. I was not there during tourist season, nor did I...
Read moreI arrived early, around 10ish, so my room wasn't ready, which I had expected. However, I was offered breakfast and made comfortable. Mine hosts were delightful people and made me feel really welcome. I only stayed one night and wish I had stayed a little longer. Breakfast was fine although a little late in the morning, and the waitress obviously didn't want to be there. Quite rude in fact when I arrived all of 10 minutes early, not knowing what time was expected of me.||Dinner was huge but I could eat hardly any of it owing to recent throat radiation. Dinner waitress was the polar opposite of breakfast waitress and she was most concerned that I couldn't eat.||Only downside of this hotel was on leaving I asked my way to the bus station and was given the wrong directions. Thankfully a young man saw my dilemma and put me on...
