This is a charming lakeside vacation spot with sleeping cottages, set on sand dunes surrounded by garden greenery. Meals (breakfast and dinner) are included in base tariff, and are served under a covered, open air veranda. Variety of birds and flora abound. Peaceful atmosphere where you can disconnect from the internet (WiFi available for limited time in evening), with plenty of separated areas in sun and shade for lounging, reading, napping, and conversation groups. There are hammocks, chaise lounges, chairs throughout. Drink service available throughout the day. House dinner speciality is “poulet au citron,” and is delicious! Breakfast includes bread and jams, fried egg, orange juice, coffee or tea. Bread is home made and delicious. Lunch can be arranged on site, though lunch is also recommended at Bonoba Cafe down the road, overlooking the lake. Sleeping accommodations are comfortable, equipped with mosquito nets. We stayed in one of the dune cottages which featured a large bed for two (king size) and a single bed. The cottage included a large bathroom, stocked with towels and soap, very effective toilet, full size shower though the water pressure was low. A variety of activities are offered and can be arranged in advance. We did a three hour horseback riding activity taking in agricultural areas, dunes, and oceanside. Payment is in cash only. Staff are very friendly. Basic French is a minimum here, and throughout Senegal. You can complete your entire booking via email, and have all your questions answered in this fashion. We did an overnight trip from Dakar- about...
Read moreWe spent a night in the Gîte du lac Rose. I needed a place to disconnect from work, Dakar and be in a sort of family and friendly place. The website looked very promising but reality was very disappointing. The area looks nice with some goats, horses and ostriches. The lac also looked nice especially with the sunset but nothing like « rose ». You cannot really go in there because of the salt ( not more than 15 min). Rooms are very simple: beds, no tv, one plug only, no wifi in the room. Food is average: for dinner (included in the price) we had a tiny portion of grated carrots and one small piece of lemon chicken each with some potatoes. I guess they were trying to make a sort of Moroccan tajine. Was not bad but was expected more Senegalese food than Moroccan. For dessert? One banana each! For breakfast, I was shocked: coffee (Nescafe) + bread+ butter. That’s IT. No jam, no tea, no fruits, no eggs, no cheese while they have a farm producing goat cheese. The staff is cordial, did not speak much apart from bonjour, bonsoir. I thought we were going to have a very friendly day and evening with people, perhaps a bottle of water offered or some fruits to say welcome. Nothing!!! We were planning to leave around 3 or 4 pm, we were so bored and unhappy that we called a cab to pick us up just after breakfast. I left that place with tones of bites from mosquitoes and all sorts of other insects. Sorry was not a good experience for us. Very quiet indeed but for 120 euros a night, we were expecting a bit more quality services and...
