When the taxi stopped in the city center to call the hotel and the manager met us and had to take us in personally I instantly had a bad feeling and was regretting my decision to stay here. But once we checked in (they upgraded us to a mini apartment which was way more space than we needed), turned-on the AC, we began to settle in. With in a few short days we had become very familiar with our immediate surroundings and with all the local shop keepers and we could easily find our way to and from the nearby markets, beaches etc. The people in this surrounding area were wonderful greeting us nods, waves, or smiles each day. The hotel was clean and decorated with African artwork on the walls. The temperature in Dakar was 90 degrees every day with 90% humidity. So it is HOT! There was only one AC in one bed room which did cool off that room nicely if you keep the door closed. On occasion the power did go off..but only for short periods of time. There seemed to be periods of torrential rain once a day. Mostly at night...but on a few days....it came during the day. When it comes...you need to take cover as it is no joke. With sand streets...the streets will literally wash out from underneath you. The roof top terrace was my favorite place. If gives you a beautiful view of the local area, the ocean, and the culture. At any given time you will see the children at play, women hanging laundry, men praying on rooftops or pushing the rainwaters off the roofs. From the terrace you will hear the many temples in the area and their call to prayer which over time begin to just sound like faint music in the background. Morning, noon or night this rooftop terrace is not only a 'must see' but a 'must...
Read moreWe stayed at kakatar for a month in May 2011. Price wise it is on the lower middle range with the studio that we rented at 630 euros for the entire month, but the confort is better than most London luxury hotels: we had king size beds and our own kitchenette (we were on 3rd floor), private balcony and A/C. The TV supposedly had cable, but that was kind of a joke :-), but we did not go to Senegal to watch TV anyway, so it did not matter. Decor is totallz African, done with taste. The location is very cool; sort of like a village within the city of Dakar with everyone knowing each other and sandy streets. The beach was a 4 minute walk away and the airport is close as well. The roof is awsome under the stars||Be careful and call the manger from the main road or aiport if you go there, because the place is hard to find!||There was a mosque near by that was annoying the first night as we could hear the prayer calls, but after 2 days we started loving it! Go figure :-)||Lots of little shops around and the home made meals cooked by grandma Diallo were totally...
Read moreTall building in the middle of Yoff. Very quiet. Great ocean views from our room (4th floor) and from the rooftop terrace. No restaurant, but staff can provide food delivery. Walking distance to the beach or a main road and shops. We've came by car and it was easy to get from there to Dakar's center or to escape from Dakar. Room was ok, not too clean, but not too dirty either. Maybe a little bit pricey. Kitchen facilities, including refridgerator. Don't count on breakfast, we needed it for 8.30 am, undelivered until 10 am. Better take a room without breakfast and eat somewhere in the area (good boulangerie and patisserie at the end of the street, Al Mahdi,...
