Every now and again you come across a place to stay which is a delightful experience all on its own. It was our good fortune to find Penzion Jakub and have such an experience. From the moment we arrived, tired and cranky from our four hour drive, to the moment we left four days later we were treated with warmth, attention and genuine hospitality.||||Location: Penzion Jakub is quite near the railway and bus stations which make it convenient for travellers arriving by public transport. The electric train up into the ski resorts of the Tatra Mountains is just up the road. The Penzion is on a main road. We heard no intrusive train or road noise, however, as all the windows are double glazed – and there aren't too many trains, either. It's about a 10-15 minute walk into town or a couple of minutes by car.||There is a convenient supermarket just down the road for any essentials.||||Accommodation: It is hard to describe the atmosphere of this Penzion which is created not only by the lovely staff and attention to detail but also by the excellent renovation and wonderful furnishings and décor throughout. The old beams and oak floors, the eclectic collection of objets d'art from far and wide, the antique furniture and the wall hangings and paintings come together as a whole to create a homely and uniquely elegant world of its own.||We had the Deluxe double room and we never tired of finding new “bits” to admire.||The en-suite was small but efficient with a great shower and tons of hot water. Generous toiletries.||Towels were changed daily.||Wi Fi connection was excellent and free. No English TV channels so brush up on your Slovak.||Tea and coffee making facilities were provided in the room. So good to have a cuppa at the end of a hard day's sight-seeing!||||Food: Breakfast and dinner were included in the exceptionally reasonable price – and they were both fantastic! A hot breakfast if you wished plus plentiful muesli, yoghurt, cold cuts, cake, fruit, fruit juices, toast etc||Dinner offered a huge choice of traditional dishes. My personal favourite starters were the garlic soup and the cabbage soup but there is something for every taste – and it helps that there are English translations!||||Staff: Incredibly smiling, hospitable and helpful. They all made you feel welcome and important. We thank them for their warmth and...
Read moreBooked this property for half board, based on previous reviews, as I was a solo female, I wanted to be in for dinner before dark. Arriving by train, it was very easy to find and an acceptable walk with a bag. Close to a supermarket. Check in was swift.||||The biggest drawback as an English speaker, is that none of the staff speak more than a couple of words of English. I used google translate to show my requests to staff, who were then happy to help.||||The Penzion is more a busy restaurant with 4 rooms in the loft than a hotel. The room was cosy. The only negatives were the only 2 lights were bedside and quite dim, the velux window had no blind which might be a problem in summer and there were no English TV channels. Not a major problem, as there was excellent wifi upstairs. ||||Breakfast is 8-10 with a large self service selection. Ask for the menu if you want cooked eggs and sausage. Dinner is until 9.30. Included in the half board price is soup and a main. There is a good selection for a couple of days that should be diverse enough for most. The soups have little hidden surprises. Give them a try! Portions were plentiful and pancakes can be had for a little extra. Wine is about 1.50€. Couldn't fault it. The restaurant areas are very cosy too with a traditional wood burner alight even in October.||||Proximity to the railway is close, but as I had the window closed, noise was not an issue. Ask for the Aquacity membership card for 20% off if you plan to go there. Be aware of opening times at Aquacity. The new Fire and Ice centre didn't open till 2pm in October so I wasted an hour of my 3 hour ticket. Less than 10 minutes walk to station for Tatra Electric Railway.||||Overall, I enjoyed my 3 nights and for €40 half board was...
Read moreWhile the place looks a bit beat up the food is delicious. Definitely a visit for someone who is looking for something different. Besides standard chicken and pork dishes, pastas and soups and salads, this place serves biftek (raw meat - quite a rare speciality), american steak or dear steak. Also homemade lemonade and specialty cakes - at the time they were serving chestnut & poppy seed cake. Yum yum yummy. Excelent and polite service both times we visited. We came only for dinner so we haven't tried daily menu or breakfast (they do offer breakfast buffet since they operate as B&B as well). I'm giving 4 stars due to different "kitchen" standard, I ordered the same dish 2nd time we visited and it came out different. The taste was there but presentation was lacking a finesse to match previous e perience and other dishes (dear steak as on photos 2&5) and at the time they were also out of decaffeinated coffee. Bummer! But overall, definitelly a place to come again. Delicious food...
