The Metropol has been fully refurbished very recently. The structure is 1995 (date on Otis lift panel) or earlier. We had a huge suite( "Apartment") on the sixth floor, decorated in a modern white paint style with no,pictures or any ornamentation.|| The functional nature of the furniture was very good, especially the superb bed, which was almost long enough for me.I found some proper sheets( intended for the sofa bed) in the wardrobe, and was able to get rid of the giant heavy duvets. There was extensive storage, useful if bringing a lot of walking equipment, and the usual fridge, safe,. and kettle. The windows kept out most road noise, and the curtains, whilst not quite opaque, were good enough.|| The modern styling had not gone too far,so that there was still a carpet ,not laminate floor, and the bathroom was usable: the bowl- on- shelf basin was big and had a plug, there was a bath, and the was no "hot flush" from a heated mirror.|| Some room features were not competently designed- the very good aircon was in a corner of the lounge cooling the desk, not in the bedroom:there was inadequate towel drying : the bathroom had an unnecessary second door, thus requiring powerful closers to stop clashing.|| Th room had no ironing board, but the hotel did laundry/ ironing very cheaply within a few hours.|| We had a good dinner, with excellent wine and service,in the large cool restaurant.Breakfast was particularly good, with a full range of hot food including western type sausages and reasonable bacon.Unlike the Polish five star I recently visite, there was real jam in jars and decent tea .Staffing was also good at breakfast.|| The hotel seems well run and staffed, and I would...
Read moreWe arrived by train from Vienna the evening of 08 Oct for a one night stay. We had made reservations before leaving the US and only knew of the hotel by its website. We came to Spisska Nova Ves to explore historic family birthsites located in the area. It is an easy walk from the train station. We had a nice dinner in the restaurant. Breakfast service in the morning was very good. The service in the restaurant and at the hotel reception was excellent. Our room was very clean with a comfortable king sized bed but the room was oversized with sparse furnishings such as 70s-80s era boxy furniture. The room's entrance vestibule provided a storage closet and separated the toilet (the WC) from the shower-sink (located in a separate small room). All this brought back memories of traveling central-eastern Europe in the 90s. A few quirks: besides the separate WC-shower set up, the hotel's overall layout reflects a time when it was built with large public rooms and corridors, but with micro-sized elevator cabs!
Overall this was a very good...
Read moreMy friend and me arrived in Spisska Nova Ves by Train in the middle of the night, planning to go on a hike in the nearby nature reserve, before catching another train to our next vacation spot. We had read online that in the Local Hotel, there is somebody at the reception 24/7 and that they will store your baggage for a fee.
To be quite truthful, we still had our doubts that we would be let in at 4AM or that we would be treated with kindness for showing up at this time, without even planning to stay at the Hotel.
Overjoyed to say that the experience ended up being the exact opposite. The receptionist let us store our baggage, called us a Taxi to get us to the nature reserve and engaged us in friendly conversation, while we waited. I honestly wish we would have remembered to take a picture with him, as it is these small but intimate experiences that we will remember about our vacations years later. Thanks Marek,...
