Chata pod Sokolím — Hotel in Terchová

This hotel is essentially a ski lodge some 4km into the wooded Vratna Valley (Vratna dolina) which extends into the Mala Fatra national park from the small resort town of Terchova, which is easily accessed from Bratislava or Vienna via the new motorway to Zilina. ||||The hotel has excellent mountain views and is (600m) from a ski slope with ski lift, which also runs in summer. A couple of kilometers up the road with the Vratna-Chleb cable car link which takes you close the peak of Velky Krivan and is a convenient access point for mountain-top hikes.||||The hotel itself is comfortable but basic with a nice terrace and small children's :playground. Service was generally good, although variable and/or idiosyncratic occasionally. Food in the restaurant (standard Slovak cooking) was excellent, but on the second night the menu and menu options disappeared and we had to have one standard set (soup or dumplings) as - apparently - catering capacities were limited by the arrival of tourists on a package with standard half board. Buffet breakfast included with the room was OK but coffee was weak and the orange juice heavily diluted the second day we stayed. Wi-fi in the rooms stopped working one evening as (briefly) did the hot water, but we were only mildly inconvenienced and, on the whole the location made up for the occasional drawbacks.||||Staff were polite and professional and for anyone on West European income at 30 euros per person per night (discount for children) the hotel offered good value. Most of the clientele were Czech or Slovak and was not clear if hotel caters to guests speaking other languages (signage and menus were only in Slovak). Terrible hotel and very bad service. Accomodation moderate, touristic, toilet and shower in bad condition. Restaurant closes at 10pm, you cannot order after 9:30. Prices relatively high comparing with the other hotels and taking in consideration the low quality of the kitchen. Half of the menu not available. Wi-fi does not reach the rooms. Breakfast included in the accomodation, should start at 8am but at 8:14 there was nothing left. If you have a dog you pay 11 eur (???). The only reason to stay here is that no other accomodation is available around. And we did not get any bill for the room, they just wanted cash, I hope they pay...

Leider wurden wir von unserem Aufenthalt in der Chata pod Sokolim sehr enttäuscht. Natürlich wussten wir nicht, dass wir die einzigen Gäste sein werden. Dementsprechend warteten die Angestellten anscheinend nur auf uns. Der Empfang war eher nicht herzlich. Weil wir etwas früher eintrafen als die eigentliche Check-In-Zeit, wurde direkt gesagt, dass man eigentlich den Tag davor auch gezahlt werden müsste. Dass man diese Zeit auch mit einem Bier überbrücken könnte, darauf kam das Personal nicht. Das ganze Hotel war kalt, selbst der Gastraum, während die Angestellten im Kamin saßen. Als wir dann das Zimmer selber aufsuchen durften, wurde uns noch mehr klar, dass Herzlichkeit hier wohl nicht so hoch im Kurs steht. Es war ein Zimmer im obersten Stockwerk und in der hintersten Ecke. Was soll das? Das ganze Hotel war leer. Es lief nur kaltes, vielleicht mal ganz kurz lauwarmes Wasser. Die Heizung? Lassen wir das Thema. Das Zimmer hat schon vor einigen Jahrzehnten seine besten Zeiten hinter sich gelassen. Wie kann man in einem Skigebiet solche Zimmer anbieten? Dass am Ende im Restaurant für zwei Personen nicht frisch gekocht wird, ist wohl nun klar. Aber nur frittierte Sachen anzubieten, ist eine Frechheit. Das einzige, was den Abend etwas besser machte, war das Bier. Gut, wir übernachteten in einer Zeit, in der die Sommersaison vorbei war und der Beginn der Wintersaison noch etwas dauerte. Aber wenn ich merke, dass ich keine Reservierungen reinbekomme und ich am Ende nur mit zwei Gästen für dieses große Hotel dastehe, dann sollte man das Hotel einfach für diesen Zeitraum schließen. Es macht keinen Sinn, Gäste frieren zu lassen, weil man kein Bock hat zu heizen. Vielleicht ist ein Aufenthalt in der Saison noch ertragbar, aber in den Nebensaisons, niemals! Die Lage allerdings ist super. Geht kaum besser und schöner Blick auf...
