Maybe I was expecting too much. I was surprised to find the rooms in such bad condition. Shortage of water/shower every day. The air-con old but it managed to work. Nice size screen but limited choice. 24 hour room service was great. Hospitality in South Africa is embarrassing. Trained staff can tell you with glee what you cannot do and the checkout times/penalties etc. It feels like that is their serotonin button. Great if standing by the door of a bank. Otherwise they have no clue about anything important viz Travel & Hospitality is about personal service. I blame the local hotel schools & shareholders greed. I suppose it would cost too much to let the staff be guests themselves during their training. Even for 2 nights at a semi-decent establishment. Most or all the staff have never seen the sea or even slept in a hotel as a guest. I do not claim this to be 'the solution' But its a start. There is no quick-fix. But in order to give hospitality one must have some idea of what it is first hand. It must be experienced. Otherwise we ask the impossible. Good luck SA.

I really liked the staff here. Everyone was very friendly, professional, and helpful. Everything was so clean everywhere and I always saw people cleaning public areas. I felt very clean here. I also felt safe because it is gated and they monitor who is coming in and out and I really like that. The breakfast was awesome. I was there for two nights and it changed a little bit. Both days it was great. Many options and everything with good flavor. Everything was clean and staff was attentive and kind. The only thing that I'm not fond about was the building of the room. The walls must be paper thin, because I could hear every conversation, sneeze, cough, and even someone throwing in from the room behind my head (where I sleep). This made some moments very unpleasant.

Let's start with the great: the food. Breakfast and dinner in the restaurant are awesome. The pound and Penny is awesome and the food there is great. The bad: attention to detail is missing everywhere and two examples: In my room, the towel wasn't pick up by the people cleaning the room and at the bar, I bit of sauce fell off my plate and it was still there the next evening. The ugly: the room, jeez it is sparse and there was a random bar fridge just in the middle of the room. Biggest issue is the paint fumes from the renovations. They really should've closed each floor as the passages are being repainted. It is really beautiful and the atmosphere is great, hopefully with a bit of seriousness to customer obsession being taken it can improve

And a night at the Sunnyside Hotel proved to be fun and entertaining. Not only were the staff helpful and friendly but the food, ambiance and general surrounds made us fall in love once again with this old lady of Johannesburg. ||I remember the days when we used to meet after work on the wide open terrace under the giant oak trees on a Friday. And when the sun was well and truly set we would move off to Rocky Street in Yeoville for dinner before settling for Plum Crazy night club in Central JHB. Once that closed time to head off to Godfather in Hillbrow. ||Once the sun started to make an appearance we would pass on at the Fonatana for rolls and rotisserie chicken to keep in the car for dinner whilst enjoying breakfast at the Sunnyside knowing we would sleep the day away at home. That's how our lives were in the 80's. ||Spending the weekend there again brought back all these wonderful memories. The bedrooms are as spacious as they were then (when the thought of driving home was too much we didnt have central booking offices only bright eyed and bushy tailed receptionists happy to oblige bleary eyed revellers) with a few upgrades here and there. Bigger showers and the addition of the Holiday Inn building to accommodate families. ||The Pound Bar still looked the same with the dark wood furniture you could almost hear the loud chitter chatter of women finally being allowed into men's only bars (at least this one didn't smell of urine like the others in our neighbourhood in those days as men's bathrooms were always just off rhe bar itself). The deck outside under the large oak trees was cool and the breeze rustled the leaves above us. Who would think we were just outside the city centre. There were no truck or car sounds just the shouts of children playing in the nearby pool. ||The dinner was served early as we were due to catch the Ghost Tour with MYSTERY GHOST PRODUCTIONS - previously Mystery Ghost Bus of South Africa . We all ordered something different and not only were the portions enormous but they were well cooked and nicely presented. As was breakfast this morning. I was impressed with the lady doing the omelette that I videod her precision and delight in making each one (those in the queue waiting for eggs all turned their orders into omlettes). ||Why not spend a weekend doing the tourist thing and visit the nearby Constitutional Hill or catch a show at Joburg theatre. Make it your visitors from out of town, stay of choice. I'll definitely recommend this great...
