With great expectations comes a great disappointment. We were looking forward for this stay so much and upon arrival we’re very pleased by what we saw - the location and the facilities are amazing, the room was super welcoming and equipped, but from that moment on, it was all downhill.
To start, it appears that we had a bat setting on our cabin roof, when complaining about it keeping us up at night, upon checking out, we were asked if we told “the guy at breakfast” (the manager) about it and when we said “no”, they said that he should really know about it, because other people will complain (no apologies whatsoever).
The dinner experience was another downlight - when the waiter came to our table, no greetings or words at all, just stood there looking at us and waiting for us to order. During the meal she didn’t come and check on us, and mostly ignored our table. When we finished our mains, nobody came to our table for 15 minutes. At one point I have asked another waiter for a dessert menu and he brought it right away, just never came back. After 20 additional minutes, we have given up and decided to ask for the bill. I asked it from the waiter (who brought the dessert menu) and made my point about waiting for too long, and he went to call the manager, who came to our table and just said: “so you want the bill”? She rushed back and called our original waiter who came to us quite fast and just dropped the bill on the table. There was no room for signature (as we were staying at the hotel, but our room number was on the bill), we filled the details and left. To my surprise, our waiter chased after me, saying “signature”. I replied that there was no room for it and she just said “wherever”. This morning, we had a similar experience at breakfast - they don’t really offer coffee but filtered and you need to ask for it, not offering juice. When we finally asked for juice we got the smallest glass. The waitrons seems annoyed by us asking for stuff and not really happy to serve. Honestly, this is the worst service I experienced in a 2 week trip to South Africa and one of the worst I saw in the world. I don’t think it’s an isolated case, as it was really a trend. The owner should really work on training, but maybe he doesn’t care much as ice it’s so packed anyway.
Putting the service aside, the food was extremely average, and with these price tags, it’s really a shame. We had the rib eye steak which was nicely cooked and in the right level, but who serves a cut steak over the actual fries and not next to it?!? The fries were not crispy to begin with, so maybe the whole setup was just wrong. The sweet potato and fennel gnocchi were served as huge pieces that were really ridiculous and miss out the whole point about gnocchi. The cocktails were not great as well and the wine selection quite limited by the glass and better bottles are only offered by the bottle. At breakfast the croissants were not great, and our omelettes were quite oily and serves so fast as if we are...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed at Emily Moon as part of our Garden Route road trip. The lodge is located on a river, and is decorated in an exquisite manner. The reception itself is so tastefully done- I was very impressed. The rooms are beautiful, with a hot tub overlooking the river and marshy plains.|We are vegetarians, and unfortunately, when it came to the food, we were let down. The menu at Emily's restaurant had very very few vegetarian main courses and the ones that were there were very uninspiring. So we thought we'd go to Simon's pizza bar for dinner instead. The pizza there was delicious, but we wish we had something to eat other than just pizza. The next night we went out to the city for dinner since we didn't want to eat pizza yet again. |Breakfast was great, though. We enjoyed that- plated well, and very delicious. The staff were kind and gave us suggestions for hikes we could do, and gave us a map of Plet so that we could check out other things in the area. |One thing to note is that the room gets quite chilly in the evenings. There is a fireplace though, and there are warm blankets provided for use. But even then, my husband I still felt quite cold inside the room. Would have been nice to come to a warm room after spending the day out in the cold.|Overall, we had an enjoyable stay at...
Read moreWas meant to be the pinnacle of our trip but ended up being the worst night of our two weeks travelling in SA. Can't fault the meal itself and the location was lovely, the lodges I thought held serious potential. Unfortunately for the entire night we were kept awake with what sounded like mice scrambling across the inside of the roof as well as up and down the walls. I appreciate it's a remote location however when advertising and charging boutique prices there's a minimum standard that's expected, this definitely feel below par. The lady on reception the following morning (not manned overnight) was sympathetic and said that the manager/owner would speak to us at breakfast, indeed he did. He asked us where we were from and if we were staying another night. Stated that it must be bats and sighed as he told us he would have to lift some of the roof to look (thanks for letting us know). Anyway no apologies or acknowledgement of the sleepless night. I did note orange expansion foam hardened around all the outside walls and caught on shurbs outside our lodge that would suggest that recent visitors had. Flagged the same issue in recent times. Definitely won't...
