My stay at Hotel@Tzaneen was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve ever had, made worse by the shocking breakfast service at Crawdaddy’s, the restaurant the hotel uses.
To start, breakfast was a complete disaster. I ordered Sunnyside up eggs — a simple request — and waited nearly 30 minutes while the restaurant was practically empty. After asking twice, a chef finally emerged with an unconvincing excuse that they were “busy with other orders.” When the food eventually arrived, the egg whites were still raw. I sent them back, and another 20 minutes went by before they were returned. To add insult to injury, the chef tried to lecture me that the eggs were “soft,” displaying both arrogance and ignorance. Anyone with basic kitchen knowledge knows that “soft” refers to the yolk, not undercooked whites.
The incompetence didn’t stop there. We asked for housekeeping before heading out, only to return at 3 PM to find that the room hadn’t even been started. The TV didn’t work properly, and the bathroom lights were out, leaving the room in partial darkness. For a hotel that presents itself as reputable, this is completely unacceptable.
What’s worse is the complete lack of urgency, professionalism, or accountability from staff. There’s no sense that management cares about guests or the quality of service being provided. Everything feels untrained, uncoordinated, and careless — from the restaurant kitchen to hotel maintenance.
If Hotel@Tzaneen and Crawdaddy’s want to keep calling themselves part of the hospitality industry, they need to go back to basics. Right now, both establishments are an embarrassment to the town and to anyone expecting even minimal standards of service. I would strongly advise anyone considering a stay here to...
Read moreI can't speak for the luxury suites, but the standard rooms were not worth the price we paid. While the beds were comfortable, towels were soft and the room was clean, the terrible customer service and lack of attention to basic necessities was deeply disappointing. To start with, the bathrooms have no rail for hand-towels, and the loft bedrooms have only a single plug - meaning that only one person can charge their phone overnight, should you be sharing a room with someone. The unit is listed as "self-catering", but there was not a single spatula or bottle opener in our unit, and only minimal crockery and cookware was available. These were minor issues, but quite an inconvenience when staying there for more than one night. We could've lived with this, but the service made sure that I will never return to this hotel. Reception staff were friendly, but cleaning staff were negligent. Dishtowels were not replaced, toilet rolls were not refilled in time, and on one occasion the remaining toilet paper was removed by cleaning staff, and we had to make do without this for several hours before the new roll was provided. This is completely unacceptable, considering this is a basic need that even the cheapest accommodation anywhere normally takes into account. I have stayed at much cheaper places in Tzaneen that charge half the price of this Hotel, but all my needs were met and we could stay comfortably for more than a week. I would've expected Hotel@Tzaneen to be much more enjoyable, considering the cost of our stay, but next time I will be returning to the more affordable and more comfortable AirBnBs in the area, where I actually get value...
Read moreThe hotel itself is huge, it has a variety of rooms to choose from, most rooms have a patio where the regular smoker could atlease have a smoke without worrying.
The service on the other hand should be supervised, it states on the internet that it is a 24 hour open reservation desk, but when I said I booked a room from a booking platform they were almost reluctant to help so I canceled the booking and said I will pay in cash and reserve it directly, then there was all sorts of stories, like they were almost trying to do a deal under the table acting as if they were doing us a favour, but in fact they were trying to make a few bucks on the hotels account if you know what I mean, then I said I will find a place else where, it's then that their tune changed because I also said I will speak to management the next day.
So the hotel was very modern the beds were big and spacious, there were smart TV, hot water and pretty much all you need.
I do not recommend going after normal hours because you might face similar circumstances where you would be mislead in thinking they are doing you a favour where they are actually cheating you to score money and degrade the hotels...
