I am sorry for the negative review, but I feel like it is warranted as it was by far our worst experience on our 2-week vacation in the region.
First, keep in mind that you have to pay for the camp site as well as the entrance fee to the park. This makes it much more expensive that other beautiful sites elsewhere. We paid 1000 Rands just to enter the park for one night (Family of 6).
Then, the staff at reception was very unfriendly and unhelpful. We were not told about the option to get a Wild Card, which would have been worth it for us. Then, we were provided wrong information about facilities and things to do in the park in a very dismissive way. Overall, we did not feel welcome.
When we arrived at our camping site, other people were there already. Apparently the reception told them they could just take our reserved spot. When we called the reception, we were told to just go to any other site....so much for managing reservations. It feels like anyone could just drive in and camp. The office is several km up the road and it feels like nobody is keeping track of anything.
The restroom had no water when we arrived. You can imagine what that looks like when you have dozens of people using the toilets without flushing.....yes, "stuff" piling up on top of each other.
We were looking forward to do some laundry and were told at reception we need to get some new 5 Rd coins somewhere. They only had a few to change and told us to go to the shop down the hill, which we did. We could not find change at the shop or at the restaurant. We could only do limited laundry while there (20 Rd per wash, 15 to dry...and you need it as it is pretty damp). Frustrating when you know the machine are probably full of coins. Why not setup a system which allows people to get change?
Overall this gave us an impression of poor management.
We did two walks. The suspended bridge, which was nice but not really impressive and we also went to the waterfall, which was a lot more challenging but again not super impressive.
The camp site was pretty crowded and felt like a parking lot. In summary, we felt the place was interesting but had a lot more potential than we experienced. Currently, it is definitely not...
Read moreWe stayed at Tsitsikamma Storms River Mouth camp, chalet #20, 3-5 November 2025. It's such a beautiful camp, but a pity that maintenance is lacking, as is the case in most camps from SANParks.
At an accommodation charge of R2200 p/night this is what we found: MAINTENANCE NEEDED: Missing cover strips between floor tiles and laminate flooring in kitchen & bedroom. BATHROOM: No hospitality hand soap supplied? Redo markings on taps, red & blue to indicate hot & cold water. Loose soap dish in shower. Loose mosaic and missing grouting on shower floor. Had to clean blocked shower rose. Shower door sticks on bottom rail. KITCHEN: 1 window blind totally missing (above sink). Curtains are dirty with mould marks on the bottoms and other dubious stains. Fridge is 'aligned' on a little pebble. Stove plates are very rusty. PATIO: Hand railing joint loose at corner. 1 floor plank loose at step.
SANParks, do yourself a favour and compare your accommodation quality and furnishings etc. with your competitor park of Cape Nature i.e. at Goukamma Nature Reserve. For less than HALF of your exorbitant tariff you get a luxurious 2 bedroomed chalet. We stayed there for 3 nights from 5-8 Nov.'25, what a difference! Even with a hottub, and also a bottle each of hand-wash soap, hair & body wash, shampoo, lotion, and room spray is supplied in the bathroom! Drinkwater is filtered and also a Reverse Osmosis system is installed. The accommodation at Goukamma Nature Reserve is 5 star! Quite a difference compared to Storms River...
Read moreBeen going for over 20yrs and seen the changes over the 2 decades. We love the Old Otter Trail Cabins now called Forest Cabins however, be aware due to maintenance issues, they not all at the same level of comfort. 1st off check you have a braai grid as 3x in 2weeks my cabins did not have grids and had to request at reception. Some cabins have oil heaters, other not, some lights work some not, some have TV remotes, others not, Cabin 26 matteress were totally worn out that I had move and this cabin also was damp as it is recessed into the bush which makes it darker inside as well, the water was dripping off the cabin walls and roof 24/7 as the waves breaking on the rocks had the air loaded with salt spray..beautiful but wet. If you have any chest or sinus problems, it will trigger it. Reception moved me to my previous Cabin 24, like 23, they fully exposed to the sun so alot of light and dry. All issues I had were sorted it quick by reception and maintenance bar 26 which I would avoid due to dampness.||Their new resturant and SANPARK building on the old site, will be completed December 2024 I am told which is long overdue...8yrs to be exact.||Overall, had 6 brilliant nights solo and will be heading for 2 more before we leave for the US again. Waterfall was beautiful and all the trials I walked were worth the sweat, amazing views and total relaxation. Lastly, every single person I met were super friendly which is how I always remember Tsitsikama Storms...
