Pennygum Country Cottages — Hotel in Kwa Sani Local Municipality

A very rustic cottage let down by the lack of interest from the owners as they are trying to sell the property. I should point out that there is a B&B on the property and a couple of other cottages but this review is for the 10 sleeper self-catering cottage in which we stayed in August 2018. There were lots of issues that rather spoiled the experience for us.

The main problems were :

1. They had not prepared the place for our arrival and there were large spiders in all the rooms (especially around the beds) so we had to clean. 2) Heaters were not allowed and only 2 electric blankets were provided. Firewood was at your own expense.
2. There was only one shower which was 1 square metre in size. There was a large tub in the main bathroom but the door of that bathroom would not close at all due to swollen doorposts (and the tub had spiders in it on 2 occasions).
3. It does sleep 10 but 6 of the beds are in the loft (think attic) and the lounge area (with the invaluable fireplace) was too small to accommodate 10 at once.

On the positive side: The place has a nice big yard for dogs and children to play in. Roads were good except for the last 200m but there is not much to do around Underberg. The nearby SuperSpar (5km) is a lifesaver though.

Overall I would not stay there again unless the cottage gets the renovation it is...

We stayed at Pennygum Cottages for three lovely nights. Our hosts, Pierre and Jackie (and their dogs), warmly welcomed us. Since the guest in our booked cottage, Hlogoma, had left late, we were upgraded free of charge to a larger cottage. Lungi and Goodness made sure everything was clean and organised for our stay. Each cottage is positioned so that they all have privacy and views of the sunset and mountains.

The cottage is comfortable, spacious and like a home, not a hotel. Proper mattresses, electric blankets and a well appointed kitchen are just a few of the quality amenities. Our first night's firewood, fresh milk and freshly ground coffee were on the house.

Pennygum cottages are just on the outskirts of Underberg and close to good restaurants and en route to the Drakensberg Gardens. A short walk down the servitude takes one to the Mzimkhulu River where one can enjoy a leisurely stroll and do some Birding.

Pierre has lived in Underberg for many years and very generously shared his knowledge of area highlights and offered excellent advice that helped make the most of our visit.

We'll definitely be back in Underberg and we'll most certainly be staying at Pennygum...

Wir waren 3 Nächte in dieser gemütlichen Unterkunft und haben die Zeit sehr genossen. Die Inhaber selbst waren zwar bei unserem Besuch aufgrund eigenen Urlaubs nicht anwesend, das hat uns aber Sarah im Vorfeld mitgeteilt und uns auf ihre Managerin verwiesen. Hat auch alles bestens geklappt. Lungi, die Managerin, hat uns herzlich begrüßt und gleich das African Cottage gezeigt. Ein sehr hübsches Cottage mit offenem Wohn-/Küchenbereich (Gasherd, Backofen, Microwelle, Kühlschrank), mit offenem Kamin, 2 Barhockern an einer Theke, Couch, Wohnzimmertisch, DVD-Anlage (Filme können ausgeliehen werden), einem extra Schlafzimmer mit Doppelbett (Heizdecken vorhanden), offenen Schrankbereich, Musikanlage im Schlafzimmer, zwei Bädern, eines mit Eckbadewanne und eines mit Dusche und jeweils Waschbecken, 2 WC's. Vor dem Cottage gibt es eine überdachte Terrasse mit Bänken und Tisch sowie zwei gemütlichen verstellbaren Klappstühlen und einer Braai-Vorrichtung (Kugelgrill). Der Blick vom Cottage auf die Bergwelt ist großartig. Das Cottage selbst liegt im schönen umzäunten Gartenbereich des Anwesens, das Fahrzeug kann direkt neben dem Cottage geparkt werden.||Im 6 km entfernten Ort Underberg gibt es verschiedene Einkaufsmöglichkeiten (Supermärkte etc.), ideal, um für das Frühstück einzukaufen. Vom Cottage ca. 500 m entfernt ist eine Käserei. Die Besichtigung und Probe von Käsesorten ist zu empfehlen. Uns hat der Käse zum Frühstück bestens geschmeckt.||Zum Abendessen waren wir im 4 km entfernten Restaurant "The Old Hatchery" - sehr gutes a la carte-Essen - und im "The Himeville Arms" im nahe gelegenen Ort Himeville mit gutem Pub-Essen.||Lunch bietet sich im Grind-Cafe in Underberg an. War sehr gut und schmackhaft.||Die Unterkunft ist idealer Ausgangspunkt für den Tagesausflug nach Lesotho über den Sani-Pass. Wir haben die Tour im Vorfeld über Pennygum Cottages gebucht, hat ebenfalls bestens geklappt, mit Abholung direkt vom Cottage und auch wieder Rückfahrt zum Cottage. Sehr zu empfehlen.||Alles in allem: Ein idealer Aufenthaltsort für die südlichen Drakensberge und vor allem in Verbindung mit einer Sani-Pass-Tour. Die Anlage von Pennygum ist sehr schön, das Cottage afrikanisch rustikal - könnte vielleicht demnächst einen neuen Innenanstrich vertragen, war aber nicht störend.||Wir können die Unterkunft auf jeden Fall...
