Check-in is usually quick at Marriott group hotels, but this was not the case here. The gentleman at the desk took ages to assist us (with no other guests around) and came across as fed up, almost like we were interrupting him. We asked for a late check-out as Marriott elite members, and he said "ok," but never actually noted it. The next morning housekeeping said we need to check out despite booking the late check out, and then reception confirmed that no late check-out had been recorded. This lack of attention left us disappointed. The gentleman was rude, dismissive and unattentive. ||The room itself was a decent size, with comfortable beds and pillows, though the bathroom was very small and the overall look of the room felt dated. The light from the passageway also shines through the door at night, which was disturbing. The shower leaked quite a lot, and to top it off, the TV didn’t work properly.. The channels were all shaky. In 2025, this really shouldn’t still be an issue at a hotel under the Marriott/Protea name.||On the plus side, the grounds are neat and clean, and my children enjoyed a swim in the cute, well-kept pool area. Unfortunately, when we came back to shower, there was no hot water. Reception simply told us to use another room, which felt very inconvenient, especially with kids.||A couple of other details stood out:||We were not given the WiFi passcode on check-in and had to go back to ask for it.||The welcome fruit platter was a nice gesture, but it came mixed with biltong. This made it unsuitable for us as vegetarian/halal eaters, which could have been avoided with a little more thought.||Overall, the hotel has potential — the property is clean and not badly maintained — but the service we received left a bitter taste. If you do stay, I recommend asking for the bigger, more updated rooms at the end of the hotel (room numbers 301 and up). I hope management takes note, because this could easily be a much better stay with...
Read moreWoow Woow Woow!!! What a pleasant stay we had @ Protea Hotel by Marriott Klerksdorp... On our arrival, we received a warm welcome from the receptionist. On our first morning at the restaurant we also received a very warm welcome by the lady at the info desk. The breakfast was marvelous and the service from the waitress was very pleasing. We stayed for 19 nights,(3 weeks) and one must admit that the staff of Protea Hotel is well trained on how to treat their guests... I even took their names to make sure that i acknowledge all of them when giving my review... Food & Beverage Manager. Neli Managers on duty: Mpo & Lerato Waitresses: Masego, Maele, Retshidisitswe, Rethabile, Pontsho, Nonofo. Bar Man: Sandile Kitchen staff: Mpho(senior), Mabetty, Forgiveness, Tshepo, Martha, :Emily, Lebo and Pheletso. Receptionists: Ntobeko, Nkosinathi, Maru, Khanyi. I think i forgot the other names from the reception. Even though there was this one staff member that almost spoilt our stay with her attitude but that was just small waters from what the other staff had already done to make us feel at home. And also not forgetting the cleaning staff with their phenomenal work they do on the rooms. I also think that the management should consider the price they charge for their laundry especially if the guest will be staying for a long time, its a bit too much really.... All in all, our stay was very very pleasant and very comfortable... Thank you Protea Hotel by Marriot Klerksdorp for all the good things you have done...
Read moreProtea Hotel Klerksdorp (Barend Street) - horrific experience. Made prior arrangements to check in at 10pm.Reception was jam packed with late arrivals, only one very rude gentleman assisting with check in. It took us another hour to check in. The gentlemen attending to the check in used foul language and everything at reception was "disfunctional" and it was chaos. Although we have booked and paid in advance, he refuses to assist us if we don't pay again, because apparently the confirmation does not reflect on his side. We paid (again) just to get to the room at 11h45 pm. The next morning the same guy phoned us 6am and requested us how we intend paying for the accommodation (What!!). The room was filthy and definitely not a non-smoking room. The floors were so dirty (rather kept our socks on). Reception was dirty and the manager on duty indicated that she is going to her real job in the kitchen and cannot assist anyone (I gather she was the kitchen manager and not a general manager). The door handles in the shower were missing. I cannot believe the person who did the grading for the tourism board gave this place more than one star - shame on them. This is also definitely not a safe area to...
