Greenfire Lodge Hazyview — Hotel in Mbombela

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a tour and honestly if you have to stay there, don't stay more than 2 nights. The place itself was quite beautiful and unique however the rooms were very dark due to poor lighting. The ladies that made breakfast for us were beautiful, kind and warm.

However, the manager Henney saw us (Black people) and his energy towards us was degrading and that ruined our experience. He was warm when he greeted all the White guests but when he greeted my husband and I he was very cold. When he was getting us all together for the tour he said to me "Where is your little friend" referring to my husband which i thought was quite disrespectful. We felt so uncomfortable that we were walking far behind during this tour and he made minimal eye contact with us or if he did it was quite cold, this was noticed by other people on the tour. He picked flowers for everyone else except for me and he handed my husband the scissors, no eye contact or communication and my husband picked it for me. Another tour member noticed this and was upset on our behalf as well. As it was quite dismissive and rude. When I made a comment that 11 Black staff members to individually pick in this whole farm is not a lot of staff, he directly looked at me and said "we are hiring". The connotation of a white south African man telling a Black woman to work in the farm is racially charged and inappropriate. This place is modern day slavery in my opinion.

This was a terrible racial experience that I've seen in my trip to Southern Africa and honestly would not recommend any Black tourists to stay here. It's clear to me that this manager sees Black people as beneath...

Hier war für uns eine Übernachtung eingeplant nach einem längeren Tag auf der Panorama-Route. Wir kamen etwas später an als geplant und hatten zunächst schon ein wenig Mühe, den Eingang an der Strasse zu finden. Erstaunt waren wir über das verschlossene Tor und den Zettel mit den Telefonnummern - ohne funktionierendes Telefon vor Ort wären wir völlig aufgeschmissen gewesen...!

Der Herr am Telefon beschrieb uns den Weg zur Unterkunft - welcher durch ein weiteres großes Schiebetor (mit der Hand zu öffnen) führt und dann ziemlich weit in den Wald hinein - sehr einsam hier...

Das Zimmer lag im "Nebenhaus", welches wir "für uns" hatten. Das Gebäude ist sehr großzügig, auch das Zimmer bot viel Raum. Alles war schön vorbereitet, die Wanne haben wir aber nicht genutzt. Dem Grunde nach ist alles nötige vorhanden - auch wenn Fernseher und WLAN schon ebenso fehlen, wie vielleicht eine Klima oder wenigstens ein (funktionierender...!) Ventilator.

Die Einrichtung ist sehr dunkel gehalten, viel Holz, sehr mächtig - aber auch sehr bedrückend. Wenig Farbe - alles sehr düster (und auch schon in die Jahre gekommen). Die Küche unten war sicher nutzbar - aber vom Zustand her eher wenig einladend. Platz gab es jedenfalls genug, wir hätten noch eine große Party veranstalten können...

Das Auto hatte Platz vor der Tür. Draussen war alles ungepflegt, die Grünanlagen eher verwahrlost und der Pool voller Blätter. Alles befindet sich unter hohen Bäumen und ist dementsprechend sehr dunkel.

Zum Essen sind wir zum Ort zurück gefahren - an der Kreuzung gibt es ein paar Lokalitäten. Zurück im Dunkeln war dann echt gruselig, sowohl an den Toren als auch auf dem Weg zum Haus (kein Licht, keine Lampe o.ä.). Es sind irgendwie Assoziationen zum Bates-Motel aufgekommen - keine Ahnung wieso ;-).

Das Frühstück am Morgen im Haus nebenan war recht ansprechend. Die beiden Damen haben sich große Mühe gegeben, es gab soweit alles was man hier auch erwarten würde.

Fazit: Eine ausgefallene Location mit ein wenig morbidem Charme - aber...

This lodge is amazing. It is located in a forest area. You can take walks around the lodge and you can see impala and Kudu buck. The rooms are capacious with a private bathroom. There is a bar, a barbecue area and a dining area for breakfast. This is a B&B not dinner so you can find small restaurants in Hazyview if you want to have lunch or dinner as well. There is a swimming pool and you are situated within a forest , you can hear the river flowing by your bedroom and view hippos drinking water if you are lucky . I had a great time at this lodge. You can take a walk through the forest on the designated path track and you can see male or female nyala up close if...
