We recently stayed at the Cradle Boutique Hotel and left with very mixed feelings.||Accommodation & Facilities|The rooms are well maintained, clean, and comfortably furnished, with free Wi-Fi and DSTV — which is important considering that there are essentially no free activities at the resort beyond staying in your unit. The grounds are small and the units are fairly close together, so we could hear conversations from neighbouring rooms. Facilities are fine but minimalistic, and any activity outside of your unit comes at a cost (spa treatments, game drives, guided walks, tours, or dining).||Dining|Breakfast was included and decent, and lunch offered more variety at a more reasonable price. Dinners, however, felt pretentious, overpriced, and limited in diversity — often with ingredients missing for certain meals. Service was somewhat slow but the waiters were friendly and pleasant.||Experiences & Activities|The game drive was a highlight, even though sightings can never be guaranteed in nature. Our guide, Andrew, was outstanding — knowledgeable, friendly, considerate, and passionate about the reserve and its wildlife. He also led our guided walk and went above and beyond by taking us to see caves that I suspect aren’t part of the standard itinerary. His efforts were the high point of the trip.||Concerns|The biggest frustration was the confusion and restrictions around photography. Upon check-in I was told outright that cameras were not allowed, which was later walked back. After pressing, I was eventually told that personal use of DSLR/mirrorless cameras was allowed only for wildlife, not for interiors/buildings. This was never stated in the booking process, terms and conditions, or website, and the inconsistency in how staff communicated it set a poor tone.||In practice, I decided not to use my camera at all — despite their eventual concession — simply because I didn’t want to keep re-explaining myself to different staff or justifying why I was permitted. Allowing phones but not cameras also makes little sense when both can be used in the same way. Transparency and consistent communication here are badly needed.||Overall Value|While the staff were attentive and professional, and the scenery and guided experiences enjoyable, the overall value for money just wasn’t there. The lack of free or affordable activities, the pretentious and pricey dinners, the camera policy debacle, and the somewhat underwhelming unit views left us feeling that the stay didn’t justify the cost.||The resort would also benefit greatly from something as simple as a tuckshop or small kiosk, where guests could buy snacks or light meals. As it stands, you’re forced either to spend big at the restaurant or leave the premises in search of basic items — which undermines the sense of a relaxing, all-inclusive stay.||In short: a beautiful reserve with some standout staff (especially Andrew), but let down by poor communication, overpriced dining, and...

5/5 Stars - Unforgettable Birthday Getaway at Cradle Boutique Hotel!

I recently celebrated my birthday with a 1-night stay at Cradle Boutique Hotel, and it was an absolute dream come true! From the moment we arrived, the warm and welcoming staff made us feel special.

The Hotel's stunning architecture, lush surroundings, and tranquil atmosphere set the tone for a relaxing and rejuvenating escape. Our room was cozy, clean, and beautifully appointed, with every amenity we needed.

But what truly made our stay unforgettable was the thoughtful birthday surprise awaiting us in our room. The decorations were exquisite - flowers, and a sweet birthday message - it felt like a fairy tale! The attention to detail and effort put into making my birthday special touched my heart.

The staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was nothing short of perfection. Their kindness, efficiency, and genuine warmth made us feel like royalty.

Firstly getting in touch with reception before checking in was a mission, I'd call numerous times and they wouldn't answer or call me back.

Upon arriving luckily we found friendly staff (Tumelo) that "ported" us to reception and then to our room. Unfortunately once we arrived our A/C wasn't working well but once we called maintenance all that needed to be changed was the filter which obviously meant nobody checked the room before our late check in - we also noted how dusty the floor was and our tissue box only had about 5 tissues in it, it hadn't been replenished. We then went to dinner after settling in and after the limited menu we opted for room service and were disappointed by the food unfortunately. It felt as though we could get the same if not better from a roadhouse but I must say, we then had dinner at the restaurant the following night and I had NOT ONE complaint about the food. It was absolutely scrumptious.

In the mornings however; nobody explained to us how breakfast works, what we can and can't order...we are welcomed, asked for our room number and told to choose a seat. We can't even say who served us because no one has name tags on nor do they introduce themselves, we had to keep asking for people's names. I must say the restaurant manager (Thato) was amazing. He was very attentive and welcoming. The staff in general was lovely but there bad apples that spoiled it, one of them I was told had resigned at least.

The place is gorgeous though and if you're looking for a quiet place to escape to, it works. Just don't call for a golf cart if you aren't ready for it because those guys are on the ball. They will be at your...

Our weekend stay was wonderful. The breakfast is amazing. We did the 4-hour Human Origins tour with Howard and Grant they were so knowledagble; we really enjoyed it. Afterwards we went to the spa for a 1.5 hour full body massage and it was just wonderful! We had the dinner included option, but the meals are really large (large starters, large mains and large deserts); it was too much food. We will rather not do the dinner-inclusive option and just go and have a main meal and pay for it separately (will work out cheaper also). Having said this, the food was brilliant! There is a fish cake as a starter, and usually I find fish cakes dry and a bit tasteless, but this was the best fish cake I have ever had! For main we tried the Tomahawk Steak. It was the most delicious piece of meat that I have ever had in my life! So the fishcake and the Tomahawk Steak are a must-try!! Overall, the stay was brilliant and the executive suite was great. My biggest problem was the patio of the unit. The sun comes in for most of the day (we were there in June), but there are no pull-down roller shades that one can use to try and block the sun. So we paid for unit with a patio, because we love sitting outside, but we ended up sitting inside the entire time. If they could just install roller-shades, this place would have received a 5-star.

I don't understand the hype with this hotel,it is in the middle of nowhere, you drive a dirt road to it. The cradle of humankind fossil museum is next to it and that place is also not wonderful, there are a few fake fossils and an unguided tour and you pay R80 per person. That's why I just don't understand it. The hotel is very expensive and the portions are smaller than spur, you have to reserve beforehand when you sit on the deck outside. The place has a spectacular view and can be a lot more. The legs of the wooden table felt like it was about to split, being very wobbly. The toilet has a damaged refuse bin and it is really not neat. I know a lot of places that that sells steak less than R300 and is way better. I was expecting a premium experience as the new discoveries of the fossils are quite a rare find and I would believe that a lot of persons will come to this place. Even to get it on the gps and on the internet you are never told that this is the smaller version of the real one, really disappointing. Don't waste your time. I will put a few pictures I took there on this site,so you don't need to waste your money going there. If you are loaded with money and want to get dirt on your new Range Rover ,it might be up your alley.
