The accommodation consists of spacious, beautifully appointed glamping tents with modern en suite bathrooms. It isn't possible to park right next to the tents, and there are no trolleys so expect to make a few trips to get your luggage transferred. We managed ok, but some folk may find it quite hard work. There is a lovely outside common area with braai, outside pool and seating area with a quaint bar. We didn't make use of the communal kitchen because we were served a delicious evening meal on the stoep. We appreciated the hosts flexibility in changing our breakfast arrangements. The view onto the Orange River is really stunning from this resort as it is higher up the bank. There isn't direct access to the river, but that didn't bother us. It is worth bearing in mind that the common areas are integrated with the main household so, as guests, you will be interacting with the resident dogs, cats and child. The dogs settled down nicely after the initial excitement, but it was hard to find a quiet spot away from the toddler in the house who persistently wanted to make friends with everyone. I wasn't feeling well and tried to withdraw myself into a corner, but the young chap insisted on engaging. Realising that he's young, I took myself off to our tent assuming that I could count on privacy there, but even that wasn't to be as he followed me down to the accommodation - to the extent of hanging around outside my tent door. Eventually mom took him away. Later in the day, every time, the young chap passed me he would loudly announce to everyone that 'that auntie doesn't want to talk'. I felt so bad that I approached the dad and explained that I didn't engage because I wasn't feeling particularly well. When I gently pointed out that there was nowhere for me to escape to get privacy, he became unnecessarily defensive telling me that I should expect that a toddler doesn't understand and that the property is his home. That may be true, but it is not unreasonable for paying guests to be able to access some privacy. They should be able to choose if they want to engage or not and there is plenty of space on this property to make this possible. I was made to feel uncomfortable just because I wanted some space and this very much soured what would otherwise have been a really nice stay. It's a lovely spot, but sadly I wouldn't return here. Based on my interaction with the host I'm fully expecting to get a defensive response...

Having been last year very briefly, I had hoped for the opportunity to stay over at least one night on the trip back through for work, while we were in the area. Happily, my wish came true, and I had the chance to swing through for a visit with Steph and Dirk at Frontier. So happy we had a chance.
Where to start? Steph & Dirk have done so much work on their place it's incredible. The entire place is so comfortable, spacious, and beautifully laid out. Everywhere, your eyes land on something interesting, from Dirk's photography and images adorning the walls ( an entire conversation awaits you there- you have to ask him). Dirk had literally transformed a hillside on his property into a fantastic, beautifully designed living area as part of the resort. It's literally mind-blowing to see what once was, and what it is now. Incredible.
On the topic of incredible, Steph is, in my eyes, likely the best chef in the Northern Cape. Every single dish she prepares, from a main course to salads, to appetizers, to bread, chutneys, etc., is equally fantastic. The best meal I'd had outside of Cape Town, hands down. Fantastic.
When you land at Frontier, you are truly welcomed as an honored guest and welcomed as though you've come home. The fact is, this is Steph and Dirk's home, and you are welcomed into it like family. You'll be taken care of with generous hospitality. A great way to end a long trip, or start your day, readying for the day's adventures- enjoy a tasty coffee, or a beer or drink from their bar in the afternoon. Just brilliant.
The rooms are fantastic, comfortable, roomy, and well-appointed with all you'll need in a glam-tenting room. I slept comfortably, with plenty of pillows, wonderful shower, AC, consistent electricity, and a place to sit outside my room or hang out on the terrace or at the bar under the stars. No better place.
Equal to Steph's culinary skills is Dirk's eye for composition, color, and image. The man is a brilliant photographer, and his art is all around Frontier. Do yourself a favor and have him share some of his stories, art, and images. You will not be disappointed. Check out his Instagram, as well, Fantastic work.
I absolutely love Frontier, have had a wonderful time spent there, and look forward to doing so again, hopefully, sooner than later. Well worth a visit when you're in the Northern...
Read moreFrontier River Resort offers an extraordinary escape into the rugged beauty of the Northern Cape. Our recent five-day stay at this beautiful haven was exceptional, thanks to the wonderful setting and unparalleled hospitality of Dirk and Steph, who went above and beyond to ensure that every aspect of our visit was perfect.
The resort itself is comfortable and the glamping tents provide a luxurious retreat, with spacious interiors, comfortable beds and powerful walk in showers that make you feel right at home while still immersed in the beauty of the landscape. We had an outdoor area, perfect for braaing and soaking in the serene environment as the Orange River gently flows by.
Steph’s culinary skills are amazing. Mornings at Frontier River Resort began with scrumptious breakfasts and evenings close with delicious dinners. We chose to have a tasty braai pack one evening, another highlight, allowing us to savour a traditional South African experience.
What truly sets Frontier River Resort apart, however, is the warm and genuine hospitality of Dirk and Steph. Their dedication to their guests is evident in every detail, from the personalised service, to the genuine care and concern for their guests, to the engaging conversations that make you feel like an old friend.
