After months of lockdown and the prolonged stress of compliance with Covid restrictions, we were longing for a safe, tranquil escape. My husband was about to turn 92 and I felt that he deserved to be whisked away to enjoy three carefree days at the seaside. Over many years Port of Call has become for us a favourite getaway haven. What a joy it was for us to meet for the first time, the most recent owners, John and Lynne. They proved to be fantastic hosts and after 3 days, we felt we had been life long friends! They were caring, warm-hearted, hospitable and anticipated our every need. My husband was made to feel so special on his birthday and thanks to John's generosity, he returned home sporting a brand new autographed Proteas cricket cap!||We were hugely impressed by the flawless booking and payment procedure, the Covid safety precautions upon arrival, the help we received handling our luggage and the personalised letter of Welcome on the dressing table. But more treats were waiting... Champers for the birthday celebration, homemade crunchies, a carafe of Sherry and delicious freshly ground coffee. Both guest suites are spacious, tastefully decorated and are kept in pristine condition. The wardrobe contained a wall safe and had plenty of shelves and hanging space. The beds were probably the most comfortable we have ever encountered on our travels. We were amazed to discover that we had a choice of 8 pillows! The bathroom is beautiful and now that our City's water restrictions have been lifted, the highly efficient shower with plenty of hot water was a delight to use. Young honeymooners would probably adore wallowing by candlelight in the massive bath tub.||We so appreciated having John serve us mouth watering breakfasts in our own private space situated high on the mountainside, from where we could enjoy the breathtaking view across False Bay, of the lofty Stellenbosch mountains right round to the Strand, Gordon's Bay, Rooi Els and Hangklip. Each guest suite is completely private with a delightful little kitchenette and a private balcony. Tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper and milk was provided and there was a bar fridge with a handy freezer compartment. We felt so much at home in our comfortable suite, with air conditioning when we needed it, and having been treated to such wholesome breakfasts and being able to prepare our own suppers in the well -fitted kitchenette, we felt no need to venture into Simonstown at all. In the past we have found the nearby Seven Eleven Supermarket so convenient for purchasing fresh produce, milk and newspapers. We noticed as we drove through Simon's Town, upon our arrival and departure, that the streets were clean and litter free, there was a happy buzz and most pedestrians who were out and about, were wearing their masks and obeying Covid rules. ||After only three days away, having breathed in the fresh sea breeze and the aroma of the fynbos on the hillside, our spirits were lifted and we returned home feeling refreshed and invigorated. We encourage our fellow Capetonians to support our local businesses, offering outstanding world class service. It was a wonderful privilege to be treated to a taste of heaven just an hour's drive from our own front door! Thank you so much John and Lynne! We would...
Read moreThis was our best accommodation in Cape Town. We felt like we were staying with friends. John and Lynne are such great hosts, so warm, welcoming and caring, John even gave us his personal mobile number which we could contact if we needed his help any time we are still in Cape Town. The rooms were so comfortable, spotlessly clean and perfect. And the breakfasts - mmm, don’t miss them. Home-made, generous portions, utterly delicious, ||||Special acts of kindness they did for us:||1. They helped us to launder our clothes (which were wet from a sudden rain at the Cape of Good Hope);||2) Christmas Day - they gave us each a small gift with a porcupine quill each - such thoughtfulness!||3) 3 days after we had checked out, they drove an hour to Bay Harbour Market to meet us to return a shirt my son had left behind. That’s really going the extra mile. ||||Thank you, John and Lynne. You made us feel so welcomed, we felt like we were staying with friends. Highly recommend to book their place for a...
Read moreGreat location with fantastic views of the ocean. Close enough to the penguins, twenty minutes from Kalk Bay and right at the top of Simons Town, Port of Call is a beautiful little place with clean, spacious and comfortable rooms. The attached kitchenette is stocked up with all the essentials (and then some). It has AC and a fan, the windows are easy to operate and allow fresh air in - weather allowing. ||||Perhaps the only minor problem we had (based on personal preference) is that we found the pillows to be too soft. However, if you prefer cushy pillows then this place is perfect. John is a great host and made our stay very easy and comfortable. The resident Yorkie, Peggy-Sue also made an appearance which was an absolute bonus! I can highly recommend staying at Port of Call in...
