We unfortunately broke down in the petrol station below so were taken by the tow truck (after securing our vehicle in his lock up until Monday) to this hotel. We were greeted warmly & found all the staff extremely helpful & polite. We found the lingo in Basque a bit difficult to understand coming from Marbella but we perservered. The first night the Turbot was outstanding. Cooked & served to perfection. The local white wine was superb & served in chilled glasses. We chose the local jamon to start followed by gambas plancha, again the taste was superb. Desserts were also good. The following day the car is still not ready so we had lunch, a whole rape (monkfish) with salad & wine. Again we could not fault anything. The restaurant was packed Sunday night & Monday lunch with locals & business men. In the evening we ordered a Besuga fish. The quality & service faultless. So 3 out of 3 for the restaurant. The prices for food were ridiculously cheap! I have only given 4 stars as sadly the rooms were definitely in need of refurbishment but were spotlessly clean. Update your rooms & you have a first class establishment. We have eaten all over the world & this place is a little gem for food. My husband & I thank you for all your kindness during our stay & for constantly phoning the garage on our behalf. I forgot lovely little terrace & views incredible. We hope to revisit. ...

Read moreAfter a very hard/hot day´s walking along the "Camino" we were thrilled to find a room at the Hotel Kanala. The gentleman who welcomed us was polite and helpful & the room was clean etc. - not that we were overly fussy after several days in a tent. It was only later that the problems began. The two idiots that staffed the bar/restaurant do not deserve to have jobs in "hospitality" at a time of such unemployment in Spain. Simple questions in castellano (perhaps my lack of Basque was an issue??) (e.g. is the kitchen open? may I order some food?) were met with ignorant/disinterested shrugs (him), a look that suggested I´d just landed from Mars (her). Never in my life have I been confronted with such open rudeness. An absolute disgrace. That said, other staff were fine so it´s unfair to tar all with the same brush. Writing this 2 weeks later I´m still seething! 80 pounds for a night really is rather steep for...
