Real Posada de la Mesta is a well rated manor house in a small Spanish village, Molinos de Duero, which is just about the source of the River Duero.||||It has been under previous owners, one of the top 5 Posadas in Spain. The new (they have owned it for 2 years) French owners are charming, but perhaps have not quite captured the zizz that it must have had before.||||Lovely bedrooms with stone walls, and a wealth of public rooms downstairs. However they lacked warmth both in real and perceived sense. The wood fires were not lit while we were there for 2 nights, and the heating in the rooms only operated for a brief period each night. They were not the sort of places one wanted to loiter after dinner.||||Dinner was strange too. There is a multi-course degustation menu (45€ a head). All the plates were cold, so the food was too. A particularly good foie gras was followed by a particularly bad lamb dish (3 paper thin cutlets with more fat then meat). All was served at lightening speed. The waitress did not seem too concerned about our problems with the meal or the speed of service. ||||We went on a fascinating wild mushroom trip that they organised (20€ a head). It was in Spanish as all the guests were Spanish, which we appreciated, but an English speaking monoglot may not have appreciated it.||||Another odd thing was that we could not book on the web. They insisted we phoned, again one could have the language problem with phoning. An when we did phone, were told they were busy dealing with another client, and could we phone back in 10 minutes.||||So a strange mix of pluses and minuses. And it was expensive in terms of "value for money". We did quite like it, because of the character of the building. If we did return, we would probably skip their restaurant and try eating out in the only other place in the village, apart from that there is no local...

After speaking with person and told be there in 5 min an hour later we were still stood outside. It did give us chance to look around the exterior... we were sat on garden tables in an unkempt front area, and a look around the rear of hotel showed it to be quite overgrown. |When owner turned up, ghey weren't overly helpful and handed us a key with no assistance to where room was or what services were on offer. We found our room...11... and let ourselves in... Nice room, dusty but ok with weird bathroom layout..quirky maybe...and terrible water pressure, water temp was just about ok.|Decided to walk around village, very pretty, and have food in a local hostel which was nice enough. Next day we went out exploring local area and found no one around downstairs, unlocked front door and let ourselves out. We got back to property at 17.30 that evening and found 2x new guests also waiting in garden for someone to turn up.... when woman arrived we again asked if an evening meal was a possibility but told card machine was down and would need to pre pay food with cash...not an option in my book!! As village was seemingly totally closed ,we drove to nearest next village Aberjar to eat at a petrol station cafe. We left the next day and knew it would be somewhere we would never want to visit again. Pity as the hotel was a beautiful building with amazing potential to be lovely. It was at best a poor B&B ,mind no breakfast was available either... so it was a poor backpackers hostel...
