This was a pretty good hotel to stay at. The staff were all friendly, even though they were at times clearly stressed and overworked. Part of this may be due to off-season staffing combined with a high number of guests due to awful weather in northern Europe.
I recognise a lot of the complaints in the negative reviews, to some degree, but don't feel they negatively impacted my vacation.
The rooms were fine, spacious, balcony with excellent privacy, and cleaned (almost) every day. Air conditioning works, but weakly; just keep the curtains closed during the day. The rooms are quite noise, with little insulation to the outside or your direct neighbours.
The food varies from okay to pretty good, and at no point did I feel I couldn't get a good meal. It is often a bit lukewarm; they use heat lamps to keep dishes hot, but this is obviously not sufficient.
Drinks are all-inclusive until 23:00 when they become paid, until 24:00 when the bar closes. This does help keep noise down. It's all local liquor and a reasonable beer, which is somewhat acceptable, and the staff are absolute tornadoes at getting people their drinks. Pool bar is understaffed, but I never had to wait more than a minute. The 'cocktail of the day' was often the same cocktail, rather weak in alcohol, but I liked it.
The animation team was great, doing lots of activities throughout the day both for adults and children. The mini disco was mostly the same every night, but I enjoyed watching them try to herd the kids, who greatly enjoyed it. Evi did a lot of the adult activities, like Aqua Gym, making sangria, etc, while Lillian was mostly entertaining the kids. They were both great. Unofficial member Stephan from the Netherlands was also great, despite being a guest. His enthusiasm for the Macarena was unmatched. Their equipment is limited, and could really do with upgrades.
The area is not exactly lively. There's a bar, Los Pirates de Costa Calma, with some shops and bars around it.
Suggestions to improve the hotel: Better signage and routes. You could tell newly arrived guests, because they couldn't find the pool, and people don't know about, say, the Marilyn Lounge. Especially with the construction work cutting off some routes. A bit of budget for the animation people to buy or improve some of their gear. A lot of it (like the sjoelbak) is old and worn, and needs replacing or fixing. Karaoke should not require people to be in the audio both, and there is an overhead projector, so why isn't that working? Poolside bathroom has loose seats, stuck doors, and generally a neglected appearance. The Marilyn Lounge absolutely needs some sound deadening. Even just hanging up some (old) drapes on the bare walls could help, but proper sound deadening would be preferred. Everything said there is hard to understand. Put the entertainment of that day on a bigger poster in the lobby. Having to scan through small print in several languages makes it easy to miss out on it.
Overall I'd recommend the hotel for a nice affordable holiday with relaxation as your main goal. I think the 4-star expectation hurts more than it helps. The staff are all friendly and seem to make a great team, and I thoroughly enjoyed...
Read moreI recently suffered the experience of staying at Club Hotel Drago Park a four-star all-inclusive hotel that, in my opinion, did not come close to deserving such a high rating.
Upon arrival, we were met by the most miserable middle-aged man at the reception and a toothless grinning receptionist woman whose smile was a clear sign of the unpleasant experience that awaited us. Their lack of warmth and hospitality was a stark contrast to what one would expect from a four-star establishment.
From the moment we arrived, it was evident that this place was in a dilapidated condition. 16 year old fire extinguishers , Broken tiles, worn and peeling dirty paint, and dirty, worn, unvarnished doors greeted us as we made our way to our room from hell.
To make matters worse, the room service seemed to have a policy of never changing the sheets during our ten-day stay. It was truly disappointing to come back to the same dirty and unchanged bedding day after day. This lack of attention to cleanliness was a recurring theme throughout the hotel.
Six Euros per day for a clean pool towel !!!!!! They were also faded and should have been disposed of years ago !!!!!
The food served at this hotel was absolutely horrifying. The trays were swarming with flies, and the cups and plates were filthy and broken. The tables wobbled, making it difficult to enjoy a meal without worrying about spills. It was clear that hygiene and maintenance were not priorities for this establishment.
The entertainment provided at the hotel was appalling, to say the least. Even the speaker in the supposed disco was blown and sounded terrible. It was impossible to enjoy any form of entertainment without risking damage to our eardrums. I couldn't help but feel that this was a deliberate attempt to save money on the one all inclusive free cocktail that was on offer, which, by the way, was served in a paper cup, warm, and without any ice ( I believe Ice was only available with paid for drinks)
Overall, my experience at this supposedly four-star all-inclusive hotel was nothing short of a nightmare. The dilapidated condition, lack of cleanliness, unfriendly reception staff, and appalling food and entertainment left me deeply disappointed. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone expecting a quality experience. It is clear that the rating of two stars would be more appropriate for this establishment. Any Horror Film Directors looking for their next venue Drago Park is highly...
Read moreWe stayed all-inclusive for a week in early December. It was quiet, which was what we wanted. The weather was mainly sunny and very warm, but sometimes a bit cloudy. We were delighted with it. Sun tan but no burning!
The hotel's dated rainbow decor was being updated during our stay to neutral shades. The new-look looks lovely (although my daughter preferred the rainbow!)
The staff were wonderful. They were great at assisting with booking trips, local info etc. The restaurant staff were friendly and courteous.
The food was Mediterranean salads, fish curries, meat in various sauces, pilchards, soup, lasagne, cheeses, salami etc. Slightly different every night. Also a small amount of unhealthy hotdogs, burgers, chips etc, but mostly it was great healthy food choices on offer, and more than enough of it.
There was always cake, mouse, pastries, fruits etc for pud. Breakfasts were varied and plentiful. Lots of fruits, cereals, meats, cheeses, plus traditional British breakfast food, eggs, bacon, toast etc.
Alcohol and hot drinks always available.
The pool was cool in December, but still warmer than the sea.
The hotel is a 20 mins uphill stride from the beach. We liked the elevated position, but we enjoy walking. I believe there was transport to the sea for those that needed it.
Costa Calma was lovely. Beautiful beach where we booked windsurfing. Service buses run up and down the coast at about 30 mins intervals. Cheap and friendly. Full of local people and a few tourists.
We also hired e-bikes from Volcano Bikes. That was fantastic as we travelled a long way and really enjoyed crossing the volcanic mountains to the North side of the island where the surf is bigger. You can cover 100km in day with little effort.
Morro Jable is close. We booked whale and dolphins watching here. Our hotel reception booked it at no extra cost and secured us a lift there and back at no additional charge.
We booked with TUI at a good price and were happy with all the info we got. It's been a great break and we thoroughly recommend the hotel and the resort. (And if you arrive during the repainting, don't worry: they're quiet, friendly and efficient) First class...
