A study in contrasts: a beautiful house that is behind a gas station and close to a busy road. Clean inside (despite others reporting bed bugs) with friendly caretakers but broken AC and showers that dribble at you depending on the time of day. There is a restaurant between the house and the gas station serving normal Galician fare - didn't eat there but it looked on the greasy side. More choices in town (Escrivatude) but, while it’s only a 20 minute walk the road is a death trap. We learned too late that the Camino goes behind the town and provides a lovely walk to get to Buen Camino, other spots, and the church. Do not take the taxi with a phone number ending in 811. He’s a surly old guy who charges 15 Euro to drive you 2 minutes into town. I get supply and demand...maybe it would have felt better if the innkeeper could have communicated the cost. 15 euros got you a long ride in the cities...
If you’re walking the Camino this is a logical stop, just a few hundred yards off the trail. Take the innkeeper’s advice and agree to a free pick up (in an AMG Mercedes SUV no less) for lunch or dinner at Hotel Gastronómico Casa Rosalía. It’s a 15 minute drive, which sort of defeats the fact that you’ve been walking all day to get to the hotel, but well worth it if you have 20-30 Euros a person (excluding alcohol). Cooked to order delicious meals in a lovely old building with courtyard. The driver whisks you back to the Casa when you’re satiated.
Breakfast was lovely at the Casa and the innkeeper very gracious although all communication was through Google Translate (both ways) - no Ingles. Points for effort and I'd stay again knowing the town. Without AC the room was not too hot for me although others in our party were less happy. The innkeeper said they were trying to get it fixed...if travelers in late August get the same story then we'll know there is more to the story.
It was very cool at night and you get a fast start onto the Camino the...
Read moreBedbugs! Avoid. I arrived late in the afternoon on my last day of the Camino. As with all the places I’ve stayed I checked the bedding and mattress for bedbugs and this time found all the signs: droppings on the mattress, small rust colour stains all over, and saw three bedbugs as well (see image for one). This is an issue all over the Camino and isn’t the end of the world. What prompted this one star review was the awful response from the staff. They didn’t believe it was bedbugs, saying it could have been a mosquito (???), then were incredibly rude when I asked if they would help me find somewhere else to stay as it was late and everywhere else was booked out. They repeatedly said no and told me to leave. I heard the local manager on the phone to her boss saying she couldn’t be bothered to help. Bed bugs happen, it’s not the end of the world, but what is worrying is a) the staff denying it was a problem, which may mean it spreads, and b) their rudeness when I flagged the problem. Not a place to chance. There are plenty of other lodging places nearby so definitely...
Read moreThis accommodation was booked for me via Camino Ways as a "Country Cottage" option. Upon arrival on a VERY hot day after walking all day in the heat, there was no one there. My key was simply left on the counter, and there was no water or drinks available and no town nearby to go pick up food. The location is on a busy highway with the view of a gas station. There is no a/c (which is common in Spain), but with the windows open, the room was full of flies. As a female solo traveler, I did not feel comfortable staying here. I called the number on the door and told them I was planning to leave to another hotel down the street, and they said they would call me a taxi. An hour later, no taxi had come. I then had to call for a taxi myself. The taxi driver charged me 15 Euros to drive 2km down the street to the other hotel. This was a huge disappointment as my last night before completing my 2 week long Camino. I have told Camino Ways they need to remove this accommodation from their list of hotels and cottages - especially for...
