My husband and I stayed with Jaya and his wife for one night at Elephant Camp Guesthouse. Based on the excellent reviews from Tripadvisor, we decided to book our trip with Jaya. We certainly don’t regret our decision! Jaya and his wife were wonderful and we enjoyed every minute with them! The rooms are basic but are very clean and have everything you need, including aircon and decent bathrooms. The hospitality shown to us was out of this world!||||We called Jaya one day in advance and organised for him to collect us from Galle (4 hours from Tissa), organise subsequent transfers to Ella (3 hours from Tissa) and arrange a safari for the afternoon of our arrival. Although we had to wake up before 5am to collect us from Galle, he was very punctual, happy and a delight to talk to. He was very accommodating and arranged all of this for us and for a very reasonable price. During the trip from Galle to Tissa, Jaya showed us the noteworthy spots along the way. He was always very respectful of our needs and made sure to explain what we could see in advance, including any small entrance fees to scenic sites. He was easy to talk with and ask questions about Sri Lanka because his English is very good. Upon arrival, we were greeted with lovely juices. His lovely wife prepared delicious chicken toasties for lunch. Dinner and the following breakfast were equally as delicious and very, very lavish. The safari, food at the Guesthouse and transfers were all at a very competitive rate. It is a 10 minute walk to town but we would suggest eating at the guesthouse because the food is cheap, delicious and also very safe! Although we were lucky to see a sloth bear at Yala National Park, we feel even luckier having found such a wonderful guesthouse to stay at. We’ve learnt a lot more about Sri Lanka in the last 24 hours than the previous week we’ve been here.||||If you are looking for a guesthouse that offers warm Sri Lankan hospitality, then don’t look past the Elephant...
Read moreI believe that this family prioritise giving tourists a good impression and experience in their country. We stayed at this guesthouse as a result of my husband finding a really good review in The Guardian. We were so happy that we stayed here in the end! What a positive and interesting experience! ||Our en suite room was spacious, clean and had air conditioning which was welcome as Tissa was extremely hot. We took an afternoon/evening safari but had lunch at the guesthouse first. We had devilled chicken with rice which is a slightly sweet, slightly spicy sauce with vegetables and rice and good quality chicken. We also took noodles with egg and vegetables which was also slightly spicy and delicious! The portions were huge! We figured we wouldn’t go hungry here! Safari was organised by the guesthouse and was good fun. No leopards spotted but I believe that is very rare in Yala anyway. That evening we returned to the guesthouse to a feast for kings - 6 curries, 3 sambols, fresh cucumber salad and rice! All followed by fresh fruit salad. So good. We slept well and our breakfast of eggs, toast, 9 different jams (!) and Sri Lankan coffee was lovely. ||The really nice touch was that Mr Jaya drove us to our next destination (Mirissa). He acted as a guide on the way stopping off at some points including seeing crocodiles at Bundala National Park, sampling buffalo curd and honey, Tangalle beach, the Blowhole, numerous Buddha statues. He told us he didn’t want us to miss out on what we could see between Tissa and Mirissa. He was a much safer driver than what I had experienced elsewhere in Sri Lanka and we really appreciated his...
Read morewe loved our stay in this lovely homestay. The host did everything possible to satisfy all our needs. Jay was taking care of me when I burned my leg. He was very careful and thoughtful. Jay advised us where to go and what to see. We went to see lake, tample and ocean which is 20 min drive by bike. We also feed elephant next to the Buddhist temple. Every day we brought for him bananas and abergine. Elephant loves when we come to feed him!!! We had a lovely huge room with piscurescue view of the garden. Room and bathroom was clean and with all required soap, towels, etc. Jay was bringing everything what we needed as soon as we asked. Huge sitting area outside the room with sofa's and chairs and coffee table. We had a fantastic time while sitting there and enjoying drinking our fresh homemade juices.
