I know Switzerland well (my father was Swiss) and I was bringing my partner to Switzerland for his first visit. I was obviously really keen that he should stay somewhere typically Swiss and enjoy lovely views over mountains and countryside. I wanted so much to show how beautiful it is and for the hotel to live up to the usual Swiss standards. I had asked for a room with a balcony - not realising that there are none (why did they not just tell me?) - and a nice view! So what do I get ................ a large, very shabby apartment with self catering facilities that decor deffinitely dates from the 60's (you know, 10w lightbulbs and lino on the floor - no kidding!)................. with a balcony and a view ............................ of the large gravel ..... car park!!!! Great ... not.||The owner was, indeed friendly, but the meal was like school canteen food and the breakfast not much better.||And the cost? .............. well, frankly, a rip off. It was the same price as all the other, nice, well appointed small 3* hotels with excellent food, that I have stayed in.||Nice though the family are, they really need to sort out the decor in that apartment and get their act together in the kitchen if they intend to survive. Even the lady in the Tourist Information Office in Appenzell wrinkled her nose and gave us a sort of apologetic half smile when we went in to look for alternative accommodation. She knew very well what the Kaubad is like .... and more or less said so. She found us another absolutely fantasic hotel - The Hotel Lehman - same price and glorious!||Needless to say, we moved pretty quick. We did however ask the owner what we owed him and he told us so we settled up for our stay and payed for the Appenzell Card, as requested, so the owner was not out of pocket and we left without bad feeling.||Just a shame that we did not have the courage to tell him why!...
Read moreHonest review of a SOLO traveler without a car. The hotel is being renovated and they’re doing a wonderful job. The room was clean, the interior feels homely and the breakfast buffet has a good variety, but I LOVED the made-to-order bacon and eggs. What really makes this hotel shine though are the people who run it. When I booked this property, I made the mistake of not checking its location--you can’t reach it by bus or train. There is a local shuttle service that can take you to and from, however, their app is mediocre and you need to plan your rides ahead of time as it can take some time before a driver becomes available. Fortunately, I caught my error in time and reached out to the hotel for guidance. Jannine, from the hotel, scheduled for someone to pick me up at the trains station to take me to the hotel. I was extremely grateful for that service. Once I got to the hotel, I downloaded the app and got lucky with minimal wait times to go into town and to the gondolas around the area. Every interaction I had with the people at Hotel Kaubad was genuine and kind. Polina’s attention to detail and caring demeanor did not go unnoticed, and I am grateful for all of the effort you put into ensuring my comfort and wellbeing. Dibraun’s hospitality goes above and beyond. If you are traveling to Appenzell without a car, I recommend reaching out to Hotel Kaubad through email or Whatsapp. Their location also has great hikes and mountain huts you can dine at. I promise you, staying at Kaubad...
Read moreThe best place to stay in Appenzell offers breathtaking views and feels straight out of a fairy tale. The hotel has been newly renovated and features an Italian restaurant downstairs, so you don't even need to drive into town.
What impressed us the most about this hotel was not just the stay or the location, but the exceptional service we received. From the moment we arrived, Polina came out to help us with our luggage and stroller, even carrying our baby up to the third floor while we managed the rest of our things.
When we requested hot water, she promptly brought us a kettle. She also provided berries for our baby, arranged our table for breakfast the next day, and even prepared apple puree for our little one. The list of her thoughtful assistance goes on. Whatever we needed, Polina was there to help. Throughout our trip in Switzerland, we had not encountered anyone as dedicated to caring for guests as she was.
Polina also shared local attractions, food recommendations, and hiking tips with us, making my wife's time enjoyable as they discussed various topics. During checkout, she surprised us with a thoughtful souvenir.
I highly recommend this hotel to families...
