On the way from Arusha to the National Parks, just at the foot of the Rift Valley, lies Mto wa Mbu, “River of Mosquitos”. What was once a sleepy village, was transformed in the fifties when intensive irrigation schemes were established to channel water from the Rift Valley to create acres of cultivatable land. In response to the newly fertile land migrants from around Tanzania relocated to Mto wa Mbu to make it their home.
