We booked our very first safari for an 8-day adventure in Tanzani with Gosheni Safaris in September 2023. The itinerary included the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Tarangire National Park. We chose two Sanctuary camps for some of our accommodations, Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater and Sanctuary Swala Camp in the Tarangire National Park. We chose to stay two nights at Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp.
We were greeted by Joylus, who gave us a warm and hospitable orientation of the camp. We enjoyed a refreshment as we settled in. We were escorted to our campsite, #3, by Reuben who was so very personable. What a beautiful tented camp! Once we were settled in, we ventured back to the lounge area. The sanctuary camps include free alcohol drinks (not premium spirits or champagne) as well as free laundry – what a special treat! The camp has a wood deck with a bonfire to enjoy at night as well as lounge seating to play games or socialize.
During our stay, we enjoyed delicious breakfast and dinners at the camp. We had excellent service with Davis, Edgar and Patrick. The dinner menu varied each night with a gourmet multicourse meal. Sanctuary Ngorongoro also provided delicious hot lunches that were given to our guide for us to enjoy during our game drives.
Ngorongoro Crater can be very cool at night. Each night, Rueben prepared our tent by turning on an electric heater in the room as well as electric blankets on our bed. The blankets have controls on both sides that can be adjusted at any time. The bed and the room were so cozy and comfortable at night. We slept like a baby each night.
We did partake on the free laundry service and it was exceptional. Not only was every piece accounted for, but cleaned, dried and folded so precisely – impressive when you step back and remember you are at a tented campsite!
Although you cannot see the crater from our camp, it is closely located to the gate that allows you to both enter and exit. So convenient! It’s a good idea to get an early start in the crater to get the best chances of seeing wildlife and avoid the crowds.
Hands down, this is a wonderful and hospitable accommodation to enjoy during your visit...
Read moreLoved this place. The location was very close to the entrance of the crater. Though it was not on the rim (and therefore no view) of the crater, it was in a scenic setting. The tents themselves were warm, well appointed and comfortable. The showers were clean but you have to schedule them a few minutes in advance so they can fill buckets with hot water. This didn't bother us but we did hear a few other guests grumble about it. They had a camp fire going every evening and it was a place where all guests (10 to 15 or so) would gather and share our stories/adventure of the day. The service was outstanding. The staff went out if their way to welcome and assist us. Emmanuel, our guide, was very professional as well as personable and went out of his way to make sure we had a good time on our game drives, picnic, etc. The only negative incident (hence the 4 stars) was that Jonas, the butler assigned to our tent stopped by shortly before leaving demanding a tip. We explained that we had left a very generous tip in the envelope given to us for all to share (this was the suggestion given to us by the manager at check in). However, he wanted us to give him an additional amount separately......we obliged but it did leave a little bit of a bad taste as it took away from the pleasure of giving. Other than this, we thoroughly...
Read moreA great camp situated near the rim of the crater, but without a view of the crater. The camp is frequent by wildlife; on one occasion during the day and elephant, came wandering out of the bush and right up to the deck on the dining tent. The breakfast is the usual buffet with fruits, eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, etc., etc. Dinner is served Indian Thali style - 8 or 10 small pots each with a different item placed on the table for those at the table to share. The food was very good. A mixture of various nationalities German, Swiss, Canadian (us) , and even some Americans. The old day drive down into the crater revealed an amazing assortment of animals; Wildebeest, Cape Buffalo, Zebra, Elephant, many types of Antelope, many birds, etc. Our guide Godfrey was amazing in his knowledge and although he is not attached to this camp, but was our guide for our various camps in Tanzania, knew just about everything about the animals in the crater. we would highly recommend a Safari that included this camp. The individual tents were spacious, had gas heaters which the staff turned off at 9 o’clock at night, but had electric blankets in the beds, which was...
