Nick, the best host imaginable ran an excellent, unspoilt camp in a wonderful wilderness area. What I loved was how down to earth the whole experience was - no faffing around doing unnecessary things - no fussy accommodation - dining of a high standard and best of all, in a group around the table with the inestimable, very knowledgeable Nick hosting us. We shared our time there with a pleasant couple from Sweden and we enjoyed not having a vast number of fellow guests.||Game viewing was of a very high standard since, it being very dry, and with the fires in the distance in danger of slowly heading our way, the animals wisely congregated around the rapidly drying water hole. This was a feast for photographers who had all their key beasts and birds easily within their sights. Our driver and guide were superb and I insult them by not remembering their names ..... apologies! The great treat was the smelly hippo pool which accommodated hundreds of languid hippos, snorting, farting and blowing for our delectation! They spent the day in this sticky mud and to me looked for all the world like that French pudding, Poire Belle Helene! At night they eased themselves out of the gluey mud and set off on land, travelling great distances to eat vast amounts of grass to keep them going for the next 24 hours.||Our wildlife treat was coming upon the famous Kitoto - a magnificent female leopard familiar to the area, relaxing in a tree in typical pose ....... AND ........ below on the ground, a dead, pregnant impala - Kitoto's recent kill. After watching for a while we returned to camp for lunch - being sure to return in good time in the afternoon. Our friend was still sleeping in the tree but when she realised we'd taken root beneath it, she came down to suss us out. With some cunning she assessed first the impala, then the distance up the tree, before giving our truck a good look. Before we knew it she was dragging the impala under the truck and in no time was tucking into her delayed lunch. All this a mere yard from those of us in the back of the truck. It was riveting and not a little unnerving. Suddenly she glanced up at my husband's camera and snarled angrily at it several times. Clearly she had seen her own reflection in the glass and saw it as an enemy. Scary? Yes. VERY!! But without a second glance, Kitoto departed back up her tree and we, still not quite believing what we'd seen, set off for the Hippo Pool! Now that, my friends, is game viewing par excellence! And it was not our only amazing big game sighting.||This tribute to Nick comes from the hairdryer-one! Your camp, with your warm and intelligent hospitality, was by far and away our top camp in...
Read moreMy wife and I, and four friends just spent three nights at Fox's Katavi Wildlife Camp. It was great. The camp is tucked in along the side of a great plain, in which a river runs through. Each room and the main dining / congregating area looks out on the plain, which is constantly full of different wildlife. The entire area is just booming with game. The area is massive so you can cover quite a lot of new ground on the game drives. The guides were great. Very knowledgeable and friendly. The camp manager was great, always made sure we were happy and taken care of. The food quality was excellent, and plentiful. The fact that these camps are so open aired places make it a great get away during these times. You are always able to social distance at these camps. Each banda is very private and quite far from each other, and the main areas are large and accommodating to social distancing. The people in the camps were willing to take any measure you'd like them to, in order for you to feel comfortable. We really enjoyed our bandas. They were very clean and comfortable. It made you feel like you were camping but protected from the wilderness....
Read moreThe location of the lodge is perfect! Overlooking the ocre tinted plains of the dry season, just before the rains started. Not luxurious but a luxury to have such comfortable, well designed, spacious, clean, well maintained tents! Beds and linen were clean and not synthetic, we had solar heated warm water and functioning showers. The game drives were phenomenal, driver and guide extremely knowledgeable. We had the chance to watch a espetacular thunderstorm during one night. The sunsets are out of photo books and films. The lodge makes an enormous effort, and succeeds, in offering a variety of dishes prepared with care from regional produce. Portions are copious. The lodge’s team could not be better! Smiley, attentive and courteous! Well organised! We were in awe! The team is multi task and answer to your questions or immediately address a colleague. We hardly heard “I do not know or this is not my job “ . Whatever small details we could mention have been shared with the concerned person......
