I had an AMAZING stay at Camp Bastian in Mikumi. The place is wonderfully kept, all staff are very efficient, kind and friendly to guests, and the location a short drive away from beautiful Mikumi National Park is very convenient.
Very special thanks go to Gabriel, who gave me an extraordinarily friendly welcome at reception on the day of my arrival (I had no booking made), immediately understood my circumstances and needs, and went out of his way to accommodate them, coming up with just the perfect option for me to be able to stay at this great place and make the most of my time there.
Huge thanks also to the folks who made the 1-day safari, which Gabriel helped me to organize on the spot, an amazing experience. Sylvia, our guide, is very experienced and knowledgeable, she shared with us a lot of interesting information on local wildlife, and - working as a dream team with Combo, our tireless and skillful driver - made sure we had plenty of amazing encounters throughout the day. Big up for them both for working long hours and being so great at what they do.
I would also like to thank each and every one of the other staff members (cooks, waiters, cleaners and more) who contributed to make my brief stay so pleasant, both by excelling in undertaking their duties and by carrying them out with great friendliness, courtesy, and always with a smile on. They even helped me perfecting my (admittedly very limited) Swahili skills.
I would recommend anyone visiting the area to consider staying at this relaxing, spotless, and warmly welcoming place in the middle of beautiful nature, and I promise the folks working there will make sure you will have a blast at Mikumi.
Huge thanks to all staff of Camp Sebastian and keep up the...
Read moreGiven the Camp is by the main cross-Tanzania highway and a major truck stop the unglazed windows allow you to hear the roar of heavy lorries rather than lions through the night. And instead of a dawn chorus of birds you get the morning call to prayer from the local mosque. So this is not your typical idyllic African safari destination. In fact it was much noisier than where we stayed in Dar es Salaam. But I assume the same is true of other accommodation in Mikumi - including the new tourist chalets being built just inside the Park gates which are a 20 minute drive from Camp Bastian.|Camp Bastian is more of a hotel than a 'camp' - boasting a very large swimming pool, a spacious bar area where you can sit around a log fire and a buffet restaurant with a decent choice of food for omnivores and vegetarians alike.|Rooms range from spacious cottages set among gardens to motel-style rooms lined around the edge of the campsite area.|Staff are very helpful with luggage and friendly enough, but not in the way we've found in more rural camps where staff live in, and they have their work cut out as during our 4 nights here the place always seemed pretty full - being popular with tour groups of various sizes.|Drinking water in our rooms was not replenished unless we asked reception and the only toiletry provided was a refillable liquid soap pump by the bathroom sink, which seems a bit...
Read moreThe place feels like a dream; the decor is meticulously designed, transporting you to another world — a world of lush jungles and natural beauty. The atmosphere is incredibly unique, with warm lighting and a cozy seating area surrounding a circular fire pit in the ground, creating a magical and inviting ambiance.
While I only saw the pool area at night and didn’t have the opportunity to swim, it appeared well-maintained and thoughtfully designed, adding to the overall charm of the property.
Unfortunately, there were some significant drawbacks. The room was extremely small, leaving us barely any space to move around or store our luggage comfortably. Even more disappointing was the bathroom, which was not only tiny but also poorly maintained. The drainage system was malfunctioning, causing inconvenience, and the towels provided were visibly dirty, which was simply unacceptable.
While the property has undeniable charm and character, the lack of attention to basic amenities significantly detracts from the overall experience. With improvements to cleanliness and functionality, this could easily become a standout...
