One of the best hotels I’ve stayed this trip, even beating all those I’ve stayed at in Istanbul ever. It’s a modern 2-storey hotel, more like a business hotel (plus the ground floor reception area). ||||Location is almost perfect, about 4 minutes walk to the old houses and churches of Midyat. The bazaars and market is 2 minutes walk and so is the center of the town. It’s along the main highway where the bus to Hasankeyf and Batman passes. A supermarket (BIM, like 711) is about 2 or 3 buildings away plus several ministores. There’s also a small restaurant in the area, bank, ATM machines around. Everything is a convenient walk from the hotel.||The staff, although, they can’t speak English, they try their best to communicate, speak to them in English and they’ll talk back in Turkish, a bit funny but in the end – albeit difficult – we understand each other. The guy at the breakfast salon (Zainy or sounds like that) is very attentive and helpful. The manager of the hotel is also very tactful along with the lady receptionist who called the van (dolmush) to pick me up along the highway right at the hotel’s doorstep. People here are sincerely nice and helpful, like they’re proud of their work. If they could only speak English, it’s perfect, beating any Holiday Inns or Intercons anywhere.||||The Room they gave me is on the second floor at the back facing – with a view – of the old town and the mosque, not the side facing the main highway which is really good for me, no noise. It’s well-lighted, bright and sunny. The room is huge, looked like it supposed to have 2 beds because there’s a space right beside the bed with a headboard but instead they just place one king-size bed where I could roll from side to side in 1 minute (no kidding, it’s big). Very comfortable room with desk and mirror, big cabinets for clothes, the small fridge inside too, and surprisingly 2 extra duvets and pillows. The window has a nice roll-down blinds, 32-inch flat panel TV with English news, temperature control is central but you can switch it up for warmer temp. White foot, hand and bath towels available. 2 disposable room slippers which they replenish daily, a shoe shine kit and sewing kit available inside the cabinet, the room is complete, the only thing missing perhaps is a kettle. They made up the room everyday!||The Bathroom is clean and spacious, shower in enclosure with a choice of small and rain shower of warm or cold water. Fluffy bath, hand and foot towels, soap, shampoo and extra roll of toilet tissue.||||Breakfast saloon is on the mezzanine floor, there’s not much as I’m the only guest at that time. I would guess this is the best hotel in Midyat. This would be a very expensive hotel if it’s located in Istanbul.||||I booked 3 but ended up staying 4 nights from 8 – 12 March 2013. Highly...
Read moreFinding ourselves with a few days free from meetings, we decided at the last minute to re-visit the southeast and so booked ahead for two nights at the Midyat GAP Hotel for the first time: this would be our third visit to Midyat. It was a holiday weekend and Midyat was busy. It has become a regional draw for Turkish tourists after its magnificent architecture and views across into Syria were made famous by a popular television series filmed here. ||Recently built and run by the Midyat municipality, the Midyat GAP has all the virtues of its era and kind: big rooms with decent bathrooms that work (and include hair dryers), a substantial decent breakfast in a pleasant and airy dining room, and very comfy beds and linens. From the hotel, it could not be simpler to find your way into and around the old city. And the staff went out of their way to be helpful. We had phoned ahead from Istanbul and reception gave us the local prices of buses and taxis from Batman airport. When it was time to move on to Mardin, the receptionist – we never learned his name!! - took the time off to drive us swiftly and well up and over the Tur Abdin and across the steppe and then up again into the winding streets of Mardin. ||We had first visited Midyat in the late 1990s on a quick taxi-tour from Diyarbekir, but come back again in 2011 when we had stayed at the recently restored Kasri-i Newroz. We dined here both nights this trip and were again charmed by the service and high standard of regional cuisine; an excellent wine list too in a region famous for its wine. We drank an excellent red ||The Midyat GAP Hotel is a great place to stay in Midyat, and truly amazing value!||wine labelled ‘Levi Monastir...
Read moreThe staff are very nice there, even few english is spoken. We used google translate to communicate. The location of this hotel is actually quite good. If coming with Domush, you can ask to be dropped at otogar antik, or the round about before that, which is 5 minutes walk away. From there, you can also take domush to Mardin. You can take domush to Hasenkef/Batman right outside the hotel. The hotel is fairly new and very clean, targets toward turkish tourists, I guess. For this price, it is one of the best valued hotel I...
