Our trip was to visit a grandchild born only a few days before, we knew the birth was imminent and had scouted out possible locations to stay and hoped there would still be a room available at eh Old School B&B. Thankfully there was.
A long drive both sides and an emotional time meant we needed somewhere comfortable, close and peaceful - we were not disappointed.
Finding it was easy, we had been given excellent directions and everything was as it was explained, parking was easy, lots of space and close to the house. Our greeting from Peter and then David was smily and friendly, everything simple and informative.
The communal conservatory and lounge are beautifully decorated and arranged - everything in its right place and everything seemingly lovingly hand-picked for perfection. But, and this is important, it also felt comfortable, we relaxed immediately. The coffee and delicious shortbread on arrival helped!
Our room was the same, excellent bed and maybe the best pillows we have ever had over the years - these are the kind of pillows you treat yourself two and most hotels skimp on, there was no skimping here or anywhere. The bathroom was outstanding and shower large and plenty of hot water. So many important details, I only drink cafetiere coffee, that was provided, my partner likes instant - that was there too. Everything was in its right place and we felt spoilt. I must also mention just how warm it was and so quiet, helped hugely by the triple glazing. The place almost feels like a little work of art.
Breakfast was top-notch, toast delicious and artisanal, sausage herby and not too fatty, eggs done to perfection and mushrooms bursting with flavour. Delicious bacon, tomato, beans, hash browns and black pudding meant we were also very full, and we declined a variety of additional courses! The homemade jam could not be denied though and was a lovely treat.
What a lovely place - and Peter and David, attentive, friendly, funny and the perfect hosts to which we could not have asked too much.
Really I would like to give this a one-star review as we are already talking about seeing the grandchildren again and don't want it to be booked as we intend coming back! But 5 stars is easily justified.
If you are down this way, you really can't go wrong, you will be entirely spoilt. This is a marker by which we will judge future B&B's and one we shall both remember and revisit. Old school? Yes but in the very best senses and also with all the mods cons.
Peter and David thank you, our stay with you...
Read moreThis really is an outstanding B&B! Myself and my dad stayed here in July of this year to go to a charity event at the Goodwood Motor Circuit. We were drawn to it as it's one of the recommended places to stay if you're visiting the track - being less than 5 minutes drive (0.9 miles) from the circuit car park - and it certainly didn't disappoint!
The room and ensuit were immaculate: spotlessly clean and faultlessly tidy. The bed was very comfortable and the room was plenty big enough for the two of us; with ample storage and space for all our clothing and belongings. In fact, the whole place was gorgeous inside and out. The Old School has very quaint decor which gives the place a real character and a unique charm. The furniture, both in the guest rooms and in the communal areas, is tasteful; complementing the building's well-preserved, wonderful victorian aesthetic without feeling outdated. The garden is also a beautiful space to spend time in on a sunny afternoon - from its trees teaming with the brightest blossom to its pretty little pond.
Now, I certainly wouldn't be doing this bed & breakfast justice if I didn't mention that second 'B'... The breakfast was absolutely delicious! Everything served was homemade - even the porridge, jams and the bread used for the toast! There was as much freshly-pressed fruit juice as you could drink and a choice of decaf options of both tea and coffee. As I alluded to, the food itself was divine: cooked to perfection and far better than most restaurants could do. Every mouthful was a delight. And, to add to the impressiveness, they didn't even bat an eyelid when I ordered off-menu!
Hats-off to Peter and David; they are truly great hosts, not to mention a lovely couple. They were polite, friendly, warm and welcoming right from when we arrived to the minute we left. They were also good-humoured and clearly love and care about what they do, which is always so nice to see in guesthouse owners. Their attention to detail is second-to-none and they were always happy to offer help and advice wherever they could. And the end result of all their efforts is an outstanding B&B these two gents should be hugely proud of. A stunning place showcasing the best a bed and breakfast could possibly be - an asset to Westhampnett.
We'll definitely be returning...
