We stayed at brimstone for 3 nights as a mini honeymoon. We previously visited during Covid and fell in love instantly. This trip however was extremely disappointing & if we hadn’t asked guests for vouchers we would have left after the first night. We stayed in rm1. On return from dinner on night 1 we noticed the room smelled strongly of smoke (fireplace) Staff attended & confirmed they could smell it. It still smelled strongly the following morning. We both had a restless night and woke with headaches & sore throats. Staff arranged for maintenance to attend while at bfast & check it over. We were advised they couldn’t find any issue. I felt unable to spend another night there. We were initially told there were no other rooms available in brimstone or the langdale hotel. I re-iterated I could not spend another night in the room. We started googling alternative hotels at this point. One of the managers then returned & told me they had (miraculously) found another room in the hotel. We were told it was over £300 cheaper than the one we were in and “it might suit us better”. I found this comment extremely patronising. I advised money was not the issue & we were there on honeymoon. We asked about returning to brimstone the following night which is where we had booked to stay & were told there were suites available. There was some discussion about which ones. Chris commented that we were clearly sensitive to the smell of smoke so some might not be suitable. I found this comment condescending & unnecessary. Every member of staff entering the room confirmed they could smell it. The manager walked us across to the langdale, communication was poor with her back to us and mumbling. The following day we spoke with Laurie in reception & explained we needed to arrange to move back. She rang through to check what time our room would be ready & confirmed we were moving back into the other spa suite. She advised the rm would be ready for 12:30-13:00 and they would prioritise as we were moving within the site. We returned from walking at approx 13:30-13:45. We were buzzed into the reading rm after explaining we were checking back in. We were left sat waiting for approx 20mins & my husband had to go and find a member of staff. Chris told us we would not be able to get into the room until 3pm! We explained what we had been told by Laurie. He re-iterated they never guarantee rooms b4 3. We explained we had spa treatments booked for 3, we needed to shower & freshen up before then. He told us our luggage was in the rm. His suggestion was for him to go and get our swimwear out of our bags for us without us being present with them! ! Other than that there was no attempt at all by him to assist further or speed up the process. Eventually after pleading with Andrea she got us into the room with 15 mins to spare to quickly freshen up and get to the spa.
It saddens me that I am writing this review as ever since my first visit I have recommended and spoken highly of brimstone. I appreciate unforeseen issues can arise however my disappointment is with the staffs attitude and how it was handled. There was no empathy at all. I was made to feel an inconvenience and to blame for the issues. It completely tarnished my stay and experience. It was highly stressful and not the relaxing honeymoon I had hoped for. We...
Read moreExtremely disappointing and underwhelming stay.
We have wanted to stay at this property for some time and finally did so this week. Unfortunately, the hotel is not worth anything like the price that the hotel charges.
The Brimstone comes nowhere close to the likes of Gilpin or the Samling. The service is non existent. There is no reception, just the 'reading room', where you may or may not find someone wandering aimlessly around. This open area is similar to an airport waiting lounge and is soulless.
The bedroom itself was pleasant enough but required a deep clean. It was apparent that it had not been dusted, in some time, and the chaise was covered in bodily fluid stains; frankly revolting.
The spa was terrible. You had to stand in the steam rooms for any warmth; if one sat down is was cold. I know not if this was a cost saving exercise. There was no one on hand to offer any form of refreshment and you have to go into a Premier Inn style cafe if you want a drink or a snack. The staff had no people skills and if you asked for a drink you appeared to be an annoyance.
The breakfast was the worst I have had in a hotel, for some time. Staff standing around doing nothing. Food sweating in large steel containers. I asked for a crispy egg because I was so concerned about getting food poisoning from the eggs on offer and the man cracked two eggs into some lukewarm warm cooking oil; I have never witnessed anything like it before.
The reception had no knowledge about local restaurants and it is clear that the hotel does not support local independent businesses. We travelled to Billys, in Hawkshead, and the food and service was exceptional. The Brimstone could learn a thing or two by sending its management there for the night to see how customers ought to be treated.
Like another customer, the hotel didn't even acknowledge the fact that we were at the hotel for our anniversary, which was a very sad state of affairs. Overall though, we just felt completely ripped off with the cost of the stay and the service...
Read moreDo not waste your money. For the money you’re expected to pay, you can get much better service elsewhere where and close by. The site itself is a beautiful place. That’s the only positive I am willing to give it.||I have called, called again and emailed trying to get a response to my list of complaints. See below:||There is not a reception. It is genuinely a living room and 1 random guy who walks around and you need to wait for them to go back and forth to rooms before you are seen. Understaffed.||Not a single turndown took place after requesting this before my stay. Offered by your staff first hand.||I made you very aware it was our Anniversary and you asked us specifically but this resulted in nothing.||Food was dreadful quality and bland, in the restaurant and breakfast to the room. And I genuinely mean terrible, not over exaggerating.||Breakfast was not correct any of the days. Each day was missing items we ticked on our breakfast menu in the room.||Kicked out of spar after being in there for 10 minutes due to an emergency at whilst the site was filled with fire engines and police. so we did not even get to enjoy the facilities we paid for. Regardless of it being your fault or not, we did not get to use what was paid for and no offer for anything in return.||We left the milk in the room to be refilled, not once was it refilled by the service staff.||The Airconditioning was not working the entire time. The room was ridiculously hot.||Now I know I sound like a Karen, I hate to complain. But this is all amateur behaviour I would expect from a travel lodge. Not when you are paying close to £700 a night.||I wasn’t going to post this review however due to the lack of a response from the staff after being promised phone calls and responses, but not followed through. I’m left...
