I am still quite beside myself that we stumbled upon the quiet majesty of Burnhopside Hall for our long weekend retreat. It was as though the universe conspired to lead us to this haven just when rest and restoration were most needed, recovery from a heart operation. From the moment we pulled into the grounds, I felt a gentle assurance that we were in the safest of hands, not merely guests, but cherished visitors.
Burnhopside Hall is not simply a house of bricks and mortar, it is a place that breathes warmth and serenity. It wraps around you, whispering calm, contentment and a curious sense of being loved. The hosts, with their gracious attentiveness and genuine hospitality, embody the spirit of the home, welcoming, generous and kind.
The grounds are a pastoral dream and the house itself a treasure trove of charm. We found ourselves utterly enchanted, from the elegant rooms that seemed to sigh with history, to the snooker table and the grand piano, which invited playful tinkering and gentle melodies. Wildlife is in abundance, the rabbits and hares darting through the grass, hedgehogs rustling at dusk, bats flitting overhead as night draws in, butterflies dancing in the late Summer sun and the birdsong that serenaded our breakfast each morning.
Ah, breakfast...A veritable feast, both continental and cooked. I must commend the sausage and scrambled eggs, which were nothing short of divine. And then there were our constant companions... the adorable Barney and Spencer, the resident Springer Spaniels, whose charm is matched only by their loyalty and impeccable manners. My ball-throwing technique has improved immeasurably thanks to their patient tutelage and our strolls together were filled with cheerful chatter and quiet joy. The love of a dog truly leaves an imprint on one's heart.
One moment stands out above all: a golden Saturday evening, the sun dipping low behind the walled garden, the dogs at our feet and time itself seeming to pause. It was a scene from a novel, the kind one reads wistfully and wonders if such places truly exist. And indeed they do!
Parting was such sweet sorrow! I’ve rarely left a place with such a pang of reluctance. Burnhopside Hall is not merely a destination, it is a feeling, a memory, a healing balm. We shall return, of that I am certain.
With deepest thanks to our gracious hosts, whose warmth and care made our stay not only comfortable but truly unforgettable. Your hospitality is the heartbeat of Burnhopside Hall, and we are so grateful to have been welcomed into...
Read moreA wonderful place to stay for some peace and quiet. As soon as you arrive, Christine makes you feel like one of the family. The dogs welcome you too. Barney and Spencer are extremely friendly and great company. Nothing is too much at Burnhopeside Hall and Christine breakfasts are out of this world. The sausages, bacon and eggs are from the farm and delicious. There are other breakfast choices too.
Our room overlooked the grounds and this morning I watched a deer walk past my window. So much space and the bath was so relaxing especially as I filled it with bubbles.
The grounds are vast and walking around you get to see local wildlife, as well as the chickens. The walled garden has a greenhouse that is worth a look into if you like gardening.
In the house itself you can read or sit and chill in one of the various rooms, play snooker or on cold nights just relax by the fire.
If you travel by car then Durham is a only 10 minute drive away. If not then catching the bus at the end of the road is an experience. No bus stop sign, you just flag the bus down. Just check times as they are not as frequent as our London buses. 😁 Lots to see in town including the cathedral, castle and lots of...
Read moreThis is a wonderful place to stay. The accommodation and host, Christine, was welcoming and we felt at home and relaxed from the minute we arrived. The beds were extremely comfortable and gave me the best nights sleep for a long time. We loved going for walks on the estate. My grandson loved the chickens and throwing sticks for the dogs into the river for them to chase. Breakfasts were super tasty - Christine prepared our breakfast choices to our individual liking and we had something different each day eg. started off with full English then had salmon and eggs. All the food was fresh and super tasty, with eggs, sausages and bacon all locally produced. Nothing was too much trouble. Good selection of restaurants in locality - traditional English, Indian, Chinese. Supermarkets also within easy reach. The host recommended Beamish living museum. We took our grandson who loved it and the adults on our party all enjoyed that too. I have travelled the world and this place stands out - my favourite bed and breakfast establishment ever. I can...
