3 in a row!
Last September we visted Campwell for the 3rd year in a row. And I’m so ashamed that I’m only just writing my first review now…(sorry guys)
Our first visit was in 2020 when the pandemic stopped us from going abroad, we booked Campwell farm off the back of a recommendation from one of YouTubers family vloggers, The Michalaks! Myself, my husband and our 2 year old (at the time) experienced our first glamping trip together and it was everything we imagined! So good we returned to the sister site, Campwell Woods, the following year, and again this year, back to the farm!
We decided to try Abel’s cabin this year as opposed to Wossnem (a beautiful bell tent) where we stayed the first time round. Hubby being a carpenter/joiner and cabinet maker of 35 years was in his element! And very impressed! A very humble little cabin nestled amongst the trees was home for 3 nights and to switch off and have forestry and farm wherever you look in every direction was just what the doctor ordered! It was perfect! Every detail thought of. We had everything we needed and more! Each nook of the cabin was so cleverly thought through from eating areas to food prep station, the sleeping areas and even storage! Each meal was made so special sitting round the fire pit on our deck, or even up at the breakfast bar staring out at woodland, and The bed was sooooo comfortable!l…Waking up, with an instant view of trees and nature, the daylight flooding in…it put a smile on our face each morning ♥️
The cabin had everything we needed so we didn’t need the communal kitchen/eating area this time around but it makes for a lovely little adventure away from the tent ect and even lovelier when there’s another family using it. With walks in the woods, sheep spotting at the farm, and the amazingly warm, wood pellet heated pool which we had to ourselves the whole time…it was just the most charming, humble little get away before the school holidays were up and we were chuffed to call it home for 3 nights ♥️ We also ventured out to Hartley Farm shop…literally minutes away, & just the sweetest, and stocked up on local goods for our fire pit feasts! There really is no better way to make scrambled eggs! A slide for the kids too and a few animals like chickens, rabbits and Guinea pigs made it easier to keep the little one happy whilst mumma shopped!
The seven stars pub down the road was better than we remembered from 2 years previous and with the warmest welcome we had a fabulous supper! The beetroot Lasagne was to die for!
Bath city centre was a dream and a very short drive from camp…it certainly has our hearts now!
The breakfast at Hartley Farm kitchen was the best we’ve ever had and made for the perfect departure the morning we checked out! Longleat safari park is just 20 minutes away so finished off our trip perfectly before the long drive home!
If you’re after a super chill, off grid, peaceful retreat, completely at one with nature, with the option of slipping off for some luxury retail therapy/safari fun too then this is the place! Tim is so accommodating and friendly, and we are so excited to return next year and hopefully every year after that, for this seems to be a yearly tradition...
Read moreWe spent the first week of school Easter holidays in the Chief’s Den at Campwell Woods. ||We have been glamping for nearly two decades in the UK and we were keen to stay with the kids in yurts but this usually entails one big yurt for everyone to sleep in. Since we became parents, we have stayed in self-catering accommodation -including glamping- so that we can have 2 separate bedrooms and the adults get some privacy. So when I found the Chief’s Den at Campwell Woods, it was a dream come true! Three yurts in one place, including one bedroom yurt for the adults, one bedroom yurt for the kids, and one HUGE yurt as open plan kitchen dinning and sitting room. To make things even better and cosier, each yurt comes with its own wood burning stove.||Even though it was April, we arrived at Campwell Woods during a very cold week but we were never cold at the Chief’s Den – well, except for the bathroom.||The description said the Chief’s Den has its own private bathroom, but considering the nature of the place we were expecting something much more rustic like an outdoor toilet and an outdoor shower just for us. Instead, we found an enclosed full bathroom with a shower, sink, big bathtub and compost loo! We understand the environmental ethos of Campwell Woods and compost loos being part of it, but having the compost loo inside a fully enclosed bathroom was definitely a minus point for the Chief’s Den due to the smell. We had to leave the windows wide open to help with the smell, but this meant a freezing cold bathroom. Also, the sink and the shower both had warm water, but the water in the shower had barely any pressure. The water in the bathtub had lots of pressure but was never warm enough.||Little minor improvements we would recommend to the owners are: knobs or latches on the inside of the bedrooms’ doors so you can close them from the inside too; better closure for the outside doors of the bedroom yurts (we had a couple of stormy nights and our door swung open in the middle of the night!). They provide good quality bedding and large bath towels, but we could have done with a couple of hand towels too.||Bigger improvements could be summarised as moving the compost loo to an outside shed, and maybe doing away with the bathtub in case this can improve the water pressure in the shower.||Overall, the Chief’s Den was fantastic and it exceeded all our expectations, the huge terrace with its own barbecue and pizza oven was a big bonus! Our kids (9 and 6) absolutely loved it and would happily return. You can walk to Marshfield in 40 minutes if you need to shop for basics or to the nearest pubs, so not much need for a car around there. The whole atmosphere of the place is very relaxed, much more than most places we have stayed at, so definitely...
