wife and I stayed at the Langdale Chase Hotel in September this year. We had stayed at this hotel many times. The first time, over 35 years ago. Our experience was so special that it became one of our favourite hotels in the world. A combination of such a beautiful building, service and above all the incredible location and mesmerising views of the Lake. Prior to our last visit we had stayed just before the refurbishment. We looked forward to returning after the refurbishment. The refurbishment has added to what was already a beautiful hotel. I made this point to the courteous reception staff we met. It was a wonderful return apart from our experience at dinner time and breakfast time and some other service issues The hotel was informed we were vegan when my son booked our stay nearly 3 months ago. I personally rang the hospital on the eve of our arrival and reminded the lady I spoke to that we were vegan, who courteously confirmed that the hotel had already noted that information and had informed the chef. However, when we arrived for dinner it became obvious that no real thought had been given to our request . There was no choice, we were offered the Jerusalem artichoke dish 'without the cheese' and a 'truffle pasta'. We were presented with a 3 course meal of minuscule size but above all totally unattractive, and unappetising. We were particularly shocked with the main courses. Mine consisted of a plate of macaroni with no accompaniment at all or any garnish. It looked inedible. It was an insult. I would not have presented that to anyone, it should certainly have not been served in a five star hotel. No thought or effort was given to our request. With hindsight I should have rejected it. My wife's main course, 'Jerusalem artichoke without the cheese' was just as poor. We were charged £209 which included four very small glasses of a very ordinary red wine. I would have not minded paying for a dinner experience which had not consisted of food so badly presented and almost inedible. My wife and I felt that we had been treated with disrespect and exploited. The negative experience we had at dinner extended to our experience at breakfast the following morning. The staff appeared to be vaguely aware that we were vegan when we pointed out to them however there were no vegan options except for some fruit at the self service table. When we chose the vegetarian cooked breakfast we were informed that there were no vegetarian sausages left . We were at the end served a breakfast which consisted of 1 tomato, 1 mushroom , 2 very small pieces of hash brown and a minuscule pot of beans. The coffee contained oak milk which did not taste fresh. This is contemptuous and negligent of customers’ special requests. The hotel looks grander and more elegant than it has done for years. The grounds and views of the Lake remain mesmerising. The staff were generally courteous however the dining and breakfast experience were shocking. Some staff including the barman lacked the most basic skills of good hygiene and knowledge of mixed drinks. We were served an aperol spritz with a slice of orange which he handled with his hands rather than tongs and which was so weak you could not taste the alcohol. The whole experience demonstrated a lack of customer service, effort and commitment to customers legitimate and essential requests who were charged top prices to say at the hotel. It also demonstrated a lack of dedication, loyalty, responsibility and accountability to customers some of them like myself and my family who have attended this wonderful hotel for decades, and in fairness to the owners who spent £millions to provide a 5 *...
Read moreWe have stayed at Langdale Chase several times over the last few years, and have to say that we were rather disappointed with our recent stay (since the hotel has been refurbished). Bed and breakfast cost around £3,000 for 6 nights, and we were expecting a really luxurious experience for this amount of money. Sadly, upon arrival, we could not stay in our suite (which was going to cost a further £800), due to an awful smell pervading the rooms - which had just been refurbished - that seemed to originate from the heating grille. We were immediately moved next door to a smaller room and the staff were incredibly helpful with this move.... But not a great start for us, as we did not get to stay in the larger superior room(s) which we had originally booked and were really looking forward to. We were also provided with portable heaters in our new accommodation, so that the main heating did not exude a smell when turned on in that room too! Our new room was still lovely and there were several nice touches, such as free drinks in the fridge upon arrival, lovely bath salts, 2 bite-sized cakes provided each day to go with tea/coffee, pillow sprays and bathrobes and slippers. However, very disappointingly, several of the basics were very poor ......... There were no hooks at all in the entrance to the room, meaning that wet coats etc could not be hanged in the entrance away from the sleeping area, but ended up being draped over bannisters and the back of chairs. There were also no hooks provided in/near the walk-in shower or near the bath, meaning that towels and washbags had to be placed on the bathroom floor whilst taking a bath or shower! ... Provision of a stool and hooks in the bathroom would be great, albeit basic, additions. On three out of the 6 days, our room had not been serviced when we returned at around 3pm, meaning that we could not immediately shower/bathe, as there were no clean towels. We found this very frustrating as we had to call reception and then it was easier to leave our room again for quite some time while it was serviced, as we had 2 dogs with us.
Service in the lounge was poor. We were left with dirty main course plates in front of us for 45 minutes at dinner, then kept waiting about another half an hour for one dessert. On one occasion we waited over half an hour for breakfast, which was barely warm when it eventually arrived. Toast and extras often did not appear until we had finished our breakfast and one morning there were items missing from the "full English" - without apology, explanation or offer of alternative/extra items. We felt that the quality of the refurbishment was not up to the original standards of the hotel. The carpentry and furniture seemed quite flimsy, and in the grounds there were several badly chipped and broken new paving stones, missing stonemasonry, thin handrails that protruded dangerously onto the path, and there were areas of the gardens that were little better than totally unestablished and boggy, therefore almost unsightly in places - as well as a muddy nightmare if the dogs walked there. We just hope that the hotel recovers its previous standards of service, and that the refurbishment proves to be a worthwhile success. We will probably return, in the hope that these issues get ironed out now that the property is up and running again, but seems there is...
Read moreDo not stay here if you want to enjoy the holidays, rather than getting yourself into all kinds of troubles and accidents. You can stop for a meal but for the sake of your safety and your life, DO NOT STAY HERE please.
One star for the stunning view of the lake, one star for the farmland sausage here. Zero star for the hotel room itself, surprisingly bad. You waste your perfect location and beautiful outside appearance Langdale Chase Hotel.
My husband and I stayed here for honeymoon for four nights and we definitely not recommend anyone to stay here. Everyday has one problem and it wasted our precious holiday time to negotiate with the hotel. Every single day for the half of the daytime was to report to them the problems of the room, and we began our trip by pass midday. Don’t you have a basic hotel maintain team or supervisors to check your hotel? We’re not here to do their job, you didn’t pay me for my time and my cost for doing this job.
We booked their best feature room but the bathroom blind was all broken and dirty, the shower head was blocked and small water, with suddenly hot then one minute it turns cold, their so-called super king bed is actually two single bed joint and zipped together, with the two mattress is not on the same level which woke me widely up in 3am, found out it’s two separate beds with an uncomfortable gap. I couldn’t fell asleep afterwards. We’re here for honeymoon not for 50years wedding anniversary, why give us two separate joint bed?
Second night we changed to the lake house character room, the room is much smaller but finally I can have a normal bed. But this time my husband’s foot nearly got hit by your completely rusted heavy metal shower fixtures. Next morning wasted day time and reported, the hotel came and just glued it.
Third night the bathroom towel rack burned my arm good although we were very careful. But because the towel rack is burning hot is actually a grill. No warning sign about the temperature. Only one sign of Stay safe by wearing masks? Degraded hotel service makes it even more like a joke. After the accident, No first aid, no after Medicare service. After a full week from the burning accident, my arm skin still has the scar! What a honeymoon souvenir your hotel gave us. Thank you very much.
Bathtub is deep and without things to hold on, only thing is burning hot towel rack which even the hotel repairman came and tested and burned his hand and started to shout. Better be careful if the customers are little children or elderly people. You don’t want any get killed here right?
No backup service or caring service from the hotel after all those nonsense. I guess have to report to the council, the court of social media to awake the hotel CEO and mangers.
But I still like the lake view and local farm sausages. Oh, but neither of those are produced by the hotel right? Lake view is from the nature and sausage is from the local butcher, aw you are...
