Cal Mac let us down terribly - Ferry unable to sail - but very poor communication from the company, and ultimately we were left high and dry in Oban, thinking we might have to spend the night in our car. Instead we drove to Lochaline and enjoyed a warm welcome at the Lochaline Hotel prior to taking the reliable Lochaline-Fishnish ferry the next day. The hostess was very kind and welcoming; the room fresh, clean. comfortable and cosy; the bathroom huge, fabulous shower and lots of lovely fresh towels. We had a lovely night’s sleep in a very comfortable bed. The views from the hotel are gorgeous and we enjoyed a marvellous breakfast ( full Scottish for hubby with toast, and granola, fruit, home-made compote and pastries for me, unlimited teas and coffees, and fabulous views down past Ardtornish Castle). All the angst from CalMac was dissipated and the Fishnish ferry got us to Mull with no dramas! Sometimes things happen for a reason and we are so pleased that in the face of an awful CalMac experience we discovered this...
Read moreThis is a splendid tiny hotel of only five rooms, run by an extremely friendly, welcoming, and helpful married couple. It really felt like I was staying in a friend's house. The rooms had several amenities and were nicely decorated. The breakfast and dinner options were both fantastic, with everything cooked to order. The view of the sea from the property is outstanding. Also, since the owners live there, they can give the type of insider advice that you cannot possibly get out of a guidebook. Highly recommend this location.
There was only one restaurant for dinner nearby, and it was booked solid for our entire stay. All the other restaurants are 30+ minutes away. This turned out to be okay because the host couple cooked dinner for us each night, and the food was pretty good. Nonetheless, future visitors might want to book their dinner reservations (and ferry reservations) a few weeks...
Read moreLochaline Hotel is wonderful. We arrived and were immediately overwhelmed at the beauty of its setting. We received a warm greeting from Shayley, the innkeeper, who showed us to our room, a very pretty room at the front of the house that overlooked the water. The room was also very comfortable and had everything we needed. And that view…priceless.
After a nice dinner we had a great, lively conversation with Shayley and Peter. The next morning’s breakfast was great and we both regretted having to leave this magical place.
After taking the ferry to Mull I got an email that I’d left my kindle tablet at Lochaline. Luckily Shayley was coming over the next day and she was able to return it to me. This was truly above and beyond any expectations!!
I cannot wait to get back to the...
