After making arrangements for a funeral tea for 30 people with the owner Cherry, in hindsight I wish I had taken notice of previous reviews regarding her abrupt rudeness, which according to recent reviews, still exists. On arrival there were 3 platters of petite party sandwiches left on a table, when I questioned her whether that was all the food available, she gave me a sharp riposte “of course not there is hot food being cooked “. On arrival, the hot food of a pasty and pizza, the size of which would be more in keeping with a 5 year olds birthday party, was served on a side plate. Cherry had also offered to supply a glass of red/white wine, sherry or soft drink per person on arrival. The room temperature white wine and red wine could only be described as plonk you can find on the bottom shelf of a budget supermarket. Even though this is a hotel, the bar is in the corner of one of the 2 reception rooms and I heard a number of complaints as people asking for a beer were told in no uncertain terms that they only had bottled beer and they would have to wait. Having had the stressful event of arranging a funeral, I wasn’t expecting a similar experience from the wake held in the Meryan House Hotel. This was heightened when everyone had left and I approached Cherry to settle the bill as I had personally made the arrangements with her and NOT via the funeral directors. She told me she was too busy at that time but would call me in the coming week and I could pay over the phone. This never happened and I had a call from the funeral directors later to say they had received an invoice from Cherry, she was charging the funeral tea for 44 people at £15.95 pp, 5 bottles of wine at £18 each. There were only 28 people at the wake of which, myself included, 3 people never ate any of the food. Suffice to say the funeral directors were not happy with her antics in trying to disguise her attempts in “increasing” her profit margins, in a subsequent telephone conversation with her she tried to explain it was a case of miscommunication… My advice to anyone who has to arrange a wake after attending Taunton crematorium, the Meryan House Hotel is not within walking distance, even though Cherry will tell you otherwise, DO NOT visit here, there are other venues...
Read moreWe married at Taunton Registry office and then proceeded to the Meryan House Hotel for our wedding reception on Friday 9th June 2023. It was a beautiful hot sunny day, great location, beautiful inside area, outside garden area and plenty of parking, and we can’t recommend it enough. The owner / manager Cherry is amazing and was so helpful the entire way through the day and preparations. Cherrie was the best to work with, she was easy-going and professional from the start, and made us and our whole party feel very welcome. You couldn’t ask for a nicer lady to work with and anyone who has planned a wedding knows you have a LOT of contact with your venue prior to the event. All our expectations were met and then some. The food and drink ‘alcoholic and soft drinks’ were absolutely amazing and all our guests made comment as to how well the day went and how much they enjoyed the food, drink...
Read moreI'd phoned in advance to check there was secure bicycle storage. Long story short: there wasn't. I was told I was silly for explaining that it was important, and invited to go and find myself another hotel. Then I was lectured about having the temerity not to book direct, and when I explained that the rate had been cheaper through an intermediary, I was told this was untrue and I couldn't possibly have checked. Bizarre, unnecessary, and downright rude. I was then told I would have had a better room if I'd called them instead of using a booking platform. Lastly, I was instructed to leave my room key in the insecure hallway on a board whenever I left the premises. Apart from the shocking welcome, the hotel was frayed but passable; remote from amenities, with an acceptable English breakfast in the morning. Cheap, and felt it. I definitely would not recommend, to cyclists, or...
