Overpriced, very rude owners/mangers. Does not meet 4 star standards As for many people this was our first holiday for nearly two years so we thought we would go all out and booked the suite at £385 per night. I haven't been to Cornwall for decades and was really looking forward to it. The first view of the Georgian frontage was charming, as we drove down disappointment started to set in, the summer house had red tape round it, the small pond was overgrown, the car park was scruffy. We received a mediocre ‘welcome’, from reception. We not given any information just a sheet of paper telling us what was not available. I had to hide disappointed as we entered our suite. Beige from wall to celling. Never mind, I thought, jacuzzi to look forward to. On the wall side of the Jacuzzi there were 3 loose taps (swivelling around ) plus a really old fashioned mixer tap with a shower head. I turned this on and began to fill the jacuzzi. Once the water was over the jets, I pushed all buttons to get it to work – no joy. I phoned reception to ask where the instructions were/ how to get it to work and the lady said ‘I don’t know’. We both tried again and had to phone again to ask her to come up. She flicked a switch in the bedroom and all was well. There was only one toiletry product on offer (a shower gel) which had a very confusing message about it being £10 if you take it (or use it?). No shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath or shower hat Day Two We skipped breakfast as we slept in (and was later told we should have told them about this???) and headed out for a day of walking, arriving home in time for another jacuzzi. This time the water was barely warm so even that luxury was taken away. The evening meal was from the same menu so we wished we hadn’t booked Dinner in our package. We had also been informed (just before we left) that there would be a restricted choice and the bar would be closed on Day 3 because of the football. Not happy about that as we are not the least bit interested in football. We thought what next, as we had paid £2,300+ for 6 nights, and our experience had not been value for money. we were miserable and felt cheated Windows are misty, the sash windows need of repairing. There was no information in the room about anything, the website said this was available electronically but where. Our money was taken for the whole stay before we arrived, this was in the T &Cs but I have never had this happen before in a hotel Day 3 During early hours of the morning the toilet paper on the holder ran out. Of course, I searched for a spare roll – no joy. Luckily, we carry Andrex wipes. I phoned reception at a civil hour and asked where the spare(s) were. “Oh” she said “they are in the metal container near the toilet, the one with the long metal handle”, followed by “lots of people have the same problem finding them”. I am not surprised as it looks like an old toilet brush holder! After breakfast 2 lights started to flicker in the lounge area so my partner called reception to have them fixed. They phoned back and told my partner that they didn’t have anyone to fix it and was not sure when it could be done. Long story short they were eventually fixed but by this time, had had enough and decided to let them know that generally we were not happy with our stay. There are not enough characters to describe fully what happened next but the end result of our complaining was that we were asked to leave early evening with a 400 mile trip home. It surprises me that people can give this place a good review, management must put on a good front, the man was so rude to us we were shocked to the core. My partner was accused of being abusive to a member or staff on the phone – this is not at all true. I have never been treated as badly in a hotel and I am 65 and have travelled the world, experiencing every form of accommodation from wild camping to 5*+ hotels We are in the process of making a...
Read moreWanting to eat out on Christmas day my partner and I chose the Rose in Vale- the menu seemed lovely and with the £90 price tag each (£180) we were sure it would be - WRONG.
We were ushered into a dining area which looked quite shabby and the food was totally unacceptable. My roast turkey arrived (which seemed like those turkey rolls you buy in supermarkets rather than what the menu described as 'West country turkey') but my stuffing ball (which was tiny) was completely burnt, when I asked for one that wasn't they brought over another one which was burnt too! When I explained it was burnt too they said that was all they had (hello! Its christmas day! I'm sure you should be cooking extras) and so I had none.
The dinner was tiny and the vegetables as you can see by the photos came out sloshing in water (it said on the menu they were steamed?) We asked for some bread - they said they didn't have any - But managed to find a couple of Warburtons looking slices out the back.
I also asked for my pigeon breast to be thoroughly cooked but they brought it out pink then had to do it again.
There was no staff available, nobody came and asked how our meal was, do we need anything else, not a shred of customer service or jolliness and the dining area was cold, sad looking, and the dinner itself worse than what you would get in a local pub grub type place- all for £90!!!!
When they took the stuffing ball back they never offered to get me an extra potato or something- my boyfriend asked for some water, it never arrived. Infact there were no extras at all included and the portion size was shoddy. They did give me extra gravy as there was literally no gravy at all on it.
It was Christmas day- of course we ate it, what else could we do? And then left as fast as we could. The couple beside us were also complaining of the dire atmosphere and there starter being 'tough'- I guess they were hoping to provide a luxury dinner but it was all pretty tasteless and a complete waste of time, energy and money on their end and the poor guests. The price wasn't a problem- infact I'm very happy to pay £90 as I would at Claridges or Ciprianis but this was a joke.
The staff weren't attentive and you were limited on the wine you could get by the glass. I am embarassed that they think it was acceptable and so thank you Rose-in-Vale for ruining our...

Well done!|It is difficult to read some earlier negative reviews - although I appreciate that personal experiences can vary as do expectations - some of these seem quite vitriolic and more like personal attacks on staff which is hardly fair.|I appreciate the “no pets” approach - again others may disagree but I do not want a bedroom previously occupied by a dog - a personal choice and I am glad the owners agree.|The grounds are maintained in an eco friendly way that I liked - there is no need to mow the grass till it looks like painted earth and I prefer the natural look here - well done again.|In summary we both enjoyed our stay here and would recommend for anyone who wants to get away from it all but still be in reach of nearby towns and beaches.|We do not normally eat main meals at our hotels as we force ourselves to explore more widely so cannot...
