We loved our 3 night stay at The newly refurbished Royal Oak,so much, that we ended up staying another night!
Ann, the hotel manager, who lives locally, was an excellent host and made us feel very welcome, with her extensive knowledge of the hotel's history and the surrounding area. Nothing was too much trouble!
The property was situated in the unspoilt hamlet of Rosthwaite, in the breathtaking, Borrowdale Valley.
Our beautifully appointed, deluxe triple, dog friendly room, with original oak beams, complimentary traditional decor and a large comfy bed, was located on the first floor of the annex, beside the calming beck which you could hear, flowing gently past, adding to the ambience.
To start the day, there was an excellent choice of local fresh produce, catering to all dietary needs, with a good selection of cereal, fresh fruit and yoghurt. We chose a hearty, full English Breakfast, which was served in the contemporary dining room.

The property seeped in history, was situated in the unspoilt hamlet of Rosthwaite, in the breathtaking, Borrowdale Valley.
The room was spotlessly clean with a large comfy bed, sympathetically modernised to a high standard, complimenting the traditional, original features of the annex. No TV, which was a shock at first but we soon got used to this and actually, this probably helped us unwind.
A hearty, full English breakfast was included in the price, which maintained us until teatime!
Perfect location of outstanding natural beauty, if you are looking for a luxurious, quiet break, away from the crowds. Five star, dog friendly accommodation. We would definately recommend a visit!
5 star, unpretentious, quiet, luxury, dog friendly, accommodation - for a relaxing Lakes getaway!
We would have liked to sample the evening meal but this was a set menu, with no choice, for that reason we decided to...

Room was a good size, comfy bed and the shower and bath was lovely - nice to soak after a long hike!. The bed was made daily but we did have to ask for fresh towels after 4 days, I thought as we were there for the week we would have had towels replenished every few days as standard, but we didnโt mind asking.
The breakfast was really good! Al a carte hot breakfasts and everything cooked really well! A bit disappointing that the smoothie of the day was the same for the whole week we stayed - a bit of a change one day wouldโve been nice but thatโs a small gripe as it really was lovely. The staff at breakfast - Rosina, Amy and Patrick were all really friendly and professional. We didnโt eat at the hotel in the evening as we like to get out but the menu did look nice!
The location of the hotel is great - 15 minute drive to Keswick which is a nice market town lots of shops and restaurants. Depending on where you want to go in the lakes determines where you stay, we did a number of hikes all within 30 min drive of our hotel which is great.
There are nice areas in the hotel to sit with a drink and play games in the evenings. As we brought our dog, it would be lovely to have a private fenced off area for the dog to roam about, which they donโt have here but again thatโs just being picky! The staff were great with our dog too and gave her lots of attention :)
The Wi-Fi is a bit hit and miss but it depends if youโre that bothered! We only used it to Google hiking routes so was sufficient for us!
Overall we enjoyed our stay, we would recommend dog owners to stay here for a break in the...
ย ย ย Read moreWe had a great stay here for one night while walking the Inn Way to the Lake District. Unfortunately, the hotel had a power cut the day before which resulted in a problem with their boiler so showers had cold water. The engineers did arrive in the evening but they had to order a new part for the system to work again so it couldn't be fixed until the next day. However, we had an amazing dinner in a very smart, comfortable and cosy dining room. There was complimemtary tea and coffee to help yourself too. The food was exquisite and impeccably well presented. The next morning the breakfast was just as good and when it came to paying our bill the Manager, Robert, immediately said that we would not be charged for our dinner the night before! This was compensation for the issue with the cold water. He was very apologetic and said it was the least they could do in the circumstances. Robert also resolved an issue with the booking payments after we had left. The reservation was done via Agoda who charged us the full amount but didn't transfer the money to the hotel. We were charged again by the hotel before we left. However, Robert contacted Agoda to request their money and the hotel refunded our payment. Robert was extremely polite, helpful, calm and efficient throughout all this. I would not hesitate to go back and stay and...
