This place is in short near perfect! It is in a stunning location, peaceful, quiet, plenty of walks on the doorstep and close to a village pub. Can't speak to the pub as we were only here for a night and we stayed in. We are a family of five, 2 adults and 3 kids. We stayed in room 4 which had double bed with single as a bunk over and another single bunk bed. Decent room, no damp, comfy beds and storage and sink. Nicely heated in the room but the rest of the hostel was overheated! It was very cold start of November stay but the heating was too good. We had a shared bathroom on our corridor, two shower cubicles and two toilets, very good hot water supply for showers and spotlessly clean and modern. We were very warmly welcomed a little earlier than check in time but it wasn't a problem. Checked in easily, chose evening meals, chose breakfast time. If accessibility is a concern, it's one flight of stairs to the bedrooms and as it's an old house, a couple of extra steps on some corridors. I have limited mobility but can manage stairs generally and these weren't especially difficult. There is a self catering kitchen and this was a revelation, 2 ovens and grills, 2 kettles, a microwave, 2 sinks, big fridge and plenty of counter space and storage shelves. Also every piece of cutlery, crockery, utensils and cookware you could possibly need. Also a labeling system for fridge food and drink so no confusion and no old food left behind for long. This was oy our second ever stay in a youth hostel so didn't know what to expect from the kitchen, so we ate from the catered kitchen for dinner and breakfast. Evening meal was decent on a par with standard pub food and well priced and cooked. Breakfast was buffet style but at the same time cooked fresh so no leaving it sitting around for ages in warmers, which made for a very nice cooked breakfast. Decent selection of continental items too considering we stayed on their last night of the season and they were closing up the day we checked out. The staff were lovely and friendly and gave great service too, the bar and serving area is also the reception desk and is directly in a cosy dining room with squishy sofas in a corner too, so we collapsed there after dinner and seeing the kids to bed over an hour or so, the staff were in and out of the kitchen and chatting to everyone as appropriate, so made for a lovely atmosphere. There's also a sitting room with plenty more seating, a no shoes in the hostel policy, so the entrance hall has benches to sit on to remove and store boots and shoes in as well. Everyone respected this so it really felt clean and like staying in an overgrown private home with everyone walking round in their socks 😂 We really loved our 1 night stay here and it really wasn't long enough, so I can see us visiting again as soon as they open again in February, thoroughly recommend to anyone who wants to be in the heart of the Lakes and not pay a...
Read moreLAND POD. location is stunning. Arrived a little early and told that they would book me in, but they're on holiday so we would have to wait. Er thanks. The Pod is not like the photo. Its tiny. I paid hotel price for this and it is a small 4 man tent size. No electric. No water. The very thin mattress is just on a hard floor. Didnt sleep the 1st night and left before we had to sleep again. THE BAR. Being self a self catering place I was surprised that you're not allowed to open your own drinks and are made to buy your drinks from them at their prices. DOG FRIENDLY. No they're not. Using the pod so we could bring the dog. Dogs are frowned upon there and you can't take them anywhere near the hostel. Thats not friendly. And they charged extra £5 a night to have the dog. FOOD Not good at all. Bolegnaise first night. But actually spiral pasta which wasn't cooked enough and sauce which was so acidic and no meat in it. Disnt do breakfast but guests said it wasn't great. 2nd day it was sausage and mash. OMG. WIFI this was the final straw. Advertised as WiFi. But nothing. Apparently if you stand in the corner of the kitchen you get 1 bar. You get nothing. They are aware and still advertise as having WiFi.
So cost me £140 plus a small bar bill on top due to it not really being self catering. Booked for 2 nights but bailed after 1. Shame as...
Read moreHello. Here is my honest review of YHA Eskdale.||It's excellent, could not fault anything.||It is a little haven of paradise set amongst a valley of awesomeness.||I met 2 members of staff and found them helpful and friendly. I could not remember their names sorry.||The hostel was spotless, all the common areas, kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms were all fabulous.||The main lounge room is comfortable and there were 2 other areas if you wanted some peace and quiet.||If you want walks and Cycle rides from the door you are spolit for choice here.||If hiking's your game then you can start out over Scafell and Scafell Pike, which i did and was a great day out.||Over Harter fell and through the forest at the back was also a fabulous walk, the forest was deserted and very beautiful.||I cannot comment on the food served at the hostel as I brought my own.||I love hostel life. Everyone is friendly and it's how humanity should be.||Every conversation starts with 'what did you do yesterday, what are you doing today? people are all too keen to share conversation with like minded individuals. This hostel shows the very best that the YHA is capable of. I...
